First of all I would like to thank you for the help I have received so far on this site. I really do appreciate the replies and they have helped a great deal in piecing together my family story. The question I have today is about life in Killoe in the 1870s. I know that my great grandfather left between 1871 and 1875 and I would like to know why they would have left at that particular time. I'd like to know if they would have travelled with others from the area and how they would have travelled. They ended up in Lanarkshire Scotland and I am curious to know if this was their intended destination or if they would have arrived in Scotland without a particular plan. I am having difficulty finding any historical records from the parish or the County from that time.
Many thanks in advance.

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!
We have a parish liaison for Killoe so I will alert her to your message. She may have information or can point you to resources describing leife in Killoe in the 1870s.
Most 19th century emigrants left for a better opportunities in a new land whether they were headed to America/Canada/England/Australia etc. Likely your great-grandfather took a boar to England and traveled north to Scotland. He likely had a job prospect in Lanarkshire. He may or not have traveled with others. Many times younger brothers left because the older brother was going to inherit the farm.
Let me know if you don't her back in ten days.

Thank you Roger. I do know that my great grandfather, Patrick Cosgrove came to Scotland as a child with his family. He was the first born of ten (as far as I can tell). Only 3 or 4 of them were born in Ireland.
Patrick is my closest link to Ireland. All of my ancestors on my mother's side are Irish but my other 3 great grandparents were born in Scotland and I have to go back another generation to take me back.

Hi Paula,
My 3rd Great Grandfather also left around the same time and ended up in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. I know he went over to work in the coal mines. Perhaps was the same for your ancestor too?

Hi Liz
The Coltness Iron Works was the main employer in Newmains at that time. I’m interested to know how they heard about these job opportunities and how they made their way there. Also what life was like in Killoe at that time which made them think Scotland was a better bet. For that generation of my family it didn’t really turn out that way.
