Hello Mostrim parish,
I have an 1848 baptism record and am writing to ask whether anyone with CARNEY family in this parish knows anything of my family who once lived there? The baptism I found in the Mostrm Catholic parish book is for James (Jacobus in the church Latin) baptised 12 June 1848. His parents were James and Bridget (DONOHOE Carney. Sponsors Thomas McLAUGHLIN (sp?) and Maria H___? can't read her name. We have a prayer book in which James had written his name and "Bohey, Leitrim" and I do not know if he lived there after or before his Mostrim residence. We had heard that James Carney -- the father of the boy in this baptism record-- may have worked as a miner (?) and that he died young - either in the eastern US or he may have died in Longford; family did not know. This couple had other children born in Ireland but I cannot find any other of their baptisms than James, and cannot find the marriage record of James and Bridget. After James Carney died, Bridget the widow moved to Illinois and remarried there to Patrick Rogan. It was a relative John O'HARA who accompanied the little Carney boys on a ship from Ireland and brought them to join the rest of the Donahoe clan in Grundy County Illinois. By the year 1860 Bridget is in the US census in Illinois, remarried and her children are listed in census there - John , James, Patrick, and MIchael. (their names given as Rogan incorrectly - they went all their lives by Carney.) We have James' marriage record giving his information born Longford and his death certificate matches the Irish baptism record perfectly, that he was born 10 June 1848. He died in 1916 in Grundy County Illinois.
I have seen in Griffiths other Carney names and wonder whether any were family and may know something of our people. The Mostrim parish book, if anyone wants to look at the record, is indexed as Jacobus Carry (last name not transcribed well - on the image itself it reads Carny). Thank you for any suggestions for my research. Catherine Green

Dear Catherine
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.
I have checked out the residential phone book but there is no public listing for Carneys in the area. The listing usually includes an address that we sometimes suggest writing to in case that person is related somehow.
I wanted to invite you to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.
Best wishes
