My great great Grandfather Michael Gaugharty (and other versions of his name) stated on his Army Records he was born in 1810/11 in the parish of Templemichael just outside the town of Longford.

I understand that within each parish there are a number of townlands.  Is there anyway of finding out which townland he/his family lived in?

Thank you

  • Mary:

The subscription site Roots Ireland has an October 26 1808 baptismal record for a Michael Geraughty with father Michael and mother Bridget Connor. No townland name is shown in the transcription of the record. The RC parish was Longford which is an alternative name for Templemichael. There was no Michael Geraughty/Geraghty record in the Griffiths in Templemichael civil parish. I also looked at the Tithe listings and did not find a record.

By the way, this Michael had three older siblings: Bridget 1803 Anne 1806 Catherine 1807

  • Many thanks Clonpriest.  I will check that out.

Also, thank you Roger McDonnell, but when my Michael Gaugharty joined the Army in 1827 his age was 17 years and he was recorded as Underage.    If he had been born in 1808 he would not have been Underage.  I can see why someone might pretend to be older than they are, but not younger.  Much as I would love to be able to confirm that Bridget Connor was his mother.  I do know his father was Michael.  On all censuses from1841 he gave his dob as 1811.

Seasons Greetings to both of you
