Searching McDonald / McArdle marriage from RC Parish of Lordship

Please provide some additional information. When was the marriage and do you have the first names of the couple? Thanks.

Thank you for your inquiry. The marriage was of Laurence McDonald and Catherine McArdle. Laurence claimed birth in Co Louth ca 1812-1821, depending on the record referred to. He died in New York State ca 1880 shortly after arriving there. Catherine was also born in Co Louth and her birth dates given were pretty consistently as ca 1819. She also was in New York when she died in 1893.

Laurence's first formal record appears in the 1841 Scotland Census with his brother Edward, living in Old Monkland Parish, Lanark Co. He next appears with his wife Catherine in that same area in the 1851 census with their first 3 children. All 3 children were listed as born in Old Monkland, Scotland. On one of their children's subsequent birth records, an entry is made indicating he and Catherine were married on or about Aug 1844 in Lordship Parish, County Louth.

I had some difficulty determining Catherine's actual surname as it frequently was written as McCart, or McCarl. Her nieces were also listed as McArdle. Ironically, on some of their Scottish records, their name is listed as McDonnell (my Co. Down and Co. Armagh relatives); but the vast majority, and most recent records indicate it as McDonald.

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie does have the Lordship parish records from 1833-1900. However, I was unable to find a marriage in that parish involving a Laurence/Lawrence McDonald/McDonnell in the 1840-1846 timeframe. There was an 1844 marriage of a Laurence McDonnell but it was in Dundalk and the spouses first name was not Catherine.

The Mormon Church has microfilmed the Lordship/Ballymascanlon church records so you may want to order the film at www.familysearch.org  The film is sent to a Mormon Family History Center near you where you can go and review the records personally. Maybe the record is there but was not transcribed correctly.

Hi Jim, in the Lordship baptismal register there is a Peter McDonald baptised 31 Jan 1846, parents Laur McDonald and Cath McArdle sponsors Felix Hanlon and Danl Ruddy. Regards Rob

Hi Rob, my thanks for that information regarding the baptism of Peter McDonald. I had been unaware of his birth, as he was not present with the family by the time of the 1851 Census (Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland). Many thanks for finding this. WIth many of the Parish records now available, I will have to resume my research is this and several other parishes.
