James Flanagan married Catherine Mills in Carlingford, Cooley Parish in 1820 and shortly thereafter (1821) emigrated to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada.  James is my GGGF and I have very good info on him in Canada.  Looking for any information about the Flanagan family who lived in that area, specifically James' parents.  Same for Catherine's family who may have been from Whitestown, Willville area?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We do not havea parish liaison for Carlingford but I will alert our parish liaison for St. Peter's Louth who is knowledgeable about the Carlingford area although he is based in the southern part of Co. Louth.

  • Hi JK plus

you have gone back as far as is likely in Ireland, Carlingford is now a popular tourist spot and there is a site which may assist but the names I do not think are common in the area now. You could try this site to see if you can find the name and also there are graveyard listings, or try their email for a query. http://www.carlingfordpeople.ie/ I see no Mills when searching Gallery but Flanagan appears but may not be from the area.

There is a site about Louth and for interest if you search WIld Goose Lodge Murders you will see a story that occurred about 25 miles from Carlingford about 5 years before they left, give you a flavour of the times.  See http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ There is a Facebook page called Cooley Photos Old and New which may interest you also, it is not the most active though.

Two points of interest, the previous query for Carlingford parish was also from New Brunswick, St John, you can see it under Carlingford parish.  Also you are probably aware the first I think Prime Minister of Canada was born in Carlingford, John D'Arcy McGee.

Hope that is some assistance, if you think there is anything else just post,

    Good Luck
