I'm searching for information about my 4th ggf, Rev. George Macartney Portis, who was an Anglican minister in Carlingford in the 1790s.

His wife (Margaret Alexander), her daughter from a previous marriage (Sarah Elizabeth Robinson), and his parents (George and Mary Portis) all probably lived with him in Carlingford. They arrived abt 1793.

His 4 children were likely born there: Mary (abt 1795), Margaret (abt 1796), George Macartney (abt 1798), and Robert Alexander (abt 1799).

Rev. George died in 1799, while away in Liverpool; I think any remaining family members moved to England afterwards.

Online records are few (and I live in the U.S.), so I thought I'd reach out through this website. Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to help!

Hi Susan, George is buried in Carlingford graveyard, died  10th April1797 age 62 years, Holy Trinity church graveyard, there is no mention of another Portis there.

I have a copy of the inscription from 1976 transcription by the Louth History Association. If you care to mail me at my site email: stpeters@irelandxo.com I will send you the inscriptions for the graveyard, it is now closed but well kept etc

I am in Carlingford occassionally and should be before Christmas and will see if I can find it and send a photo but no promises as I will be only visiting relatives for a few hours.

You may get more information from the Anglican Library here about George.  https://www.churchofireland.org/about/rcb-library  There is a History and Genealogy section and an email often gets a response.

There is a site on Louth history where I found the mention, name only, https://jbhall.clahs.ie/ There is also a Carlingford People site but gone behind a paywall I think, about €15 annually but doubt you will find any Portis photos. The site is here, https://www.carlingfordpeople.ie/  George is mentioned under Graves Old Carlingford  but paywall for the inscription, it is only two lines mind you, I have attached a snip of it for you as its not fair to tell you and then leave it.

Also have some other Carlingford information on churches etc, there is a Carlingford Heritage centre there but not sure what they have.

Feel free to email or come back to me.

    Good Luck

  • Susan, had a quick look at Roots Ireland a subscripton site and remmebering that over 40% of C of I (Anglican) records were lost when the Public Records Office was hit by a shell at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1922, a search from 1780 to 1800 shows about 6 Portis baptisms all in Donegal including an Elizabeth to a George Portis and Margaret Lockhart in 1786 in Donegal, there are two marriages also both female Portis and a few deaths, all Donegal, parish Drumhome.
