Seeking name of parents of Michael Turley (born 17 Dec 1817) in Ardnaglug, Moore Parish, County Roscommon, Ireland.  Married on January 25, 1839, in the parish to Anne Watson (born 15 May 1815).  Her mother's name may have been Catherine.  Michael's father may have been Andrew, but not certain.  They came to America in 1840 or 1841 and settled for a time in New York state.  Names of their children:  Andrew, Julia, James, Michael, Edward, Anna.  Julia Ann Turley McMahon was my great-great-grandmother.  She was born and married in America; married Owen McMahon who was from County Armagh originally.  Thank you.

  • Mona:

RC church records for Moore parish do not begin until the 1870s.

I looked at the 1828 Tithe Applotment listings for Moore parish
    www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

No Andrew listed just John and Thomas.

  • Hello,

I have not come across Turley in Ardnalgug, Ballydangan, Co. Roscommon and they do not appear in the 1855 Griffith Valuation of Ardnaglug. The tithe applotment books give very little information on Ardnaglug as it lists just two farmers.  There is a Andrew Turley listed in Griffiths Valuation for Cuilleen, parish of Creagh. The townland of Cuilleen borders Attyrory townland, and Attyrory borders Ardnaglug.  Baptismal records for the parish of Creagh are held in the Ballinasloe catholic parish and available from 1828.

Just to note, there is another Ardnaglug in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. It is located near the town centre.

    Regards,

  • Thank you so much, Roger.  I thought perhaps Andrew might be the name of Michael Turley's father, as Michael named his first son Andrew.  I saw another posting here from 2012 that mentioned an Andrew Turley, I thought in Moore Parish, but I'll have to look again.  The volunteer work that you do is outstanding and I sincerely appreciate the help.

  • Marie, thanks for your information.  I sincerely appreciate it.  I have no idea how to determine where Michael Turley and his parents lived.  His birth location was told to me by another researcher.  Here are some notes about what I have.  I am going to search for his citizenship & naturalization papers in America.

Michael Turley married Anne Watson in January 1839 in Ireland, and by September of 1841, they were in Rockland County, New York, where their first child, Andrew J. Turley, was born.  The family apparently moved around the State of New York, probably seeking land or work for Michael to raise his family.  Their children were born in various counties of the State of New York:  Andrew in Rockland County in 1841, Julia Anne in Steuben County in 1843, Michael in Orange County in 1854.  By the time their son, Edward, was born, the family was in Winnebago County, Illinois.

Michael and family appear in the 15 June 1855 NY state census for Steuben Co., town of Erwin, New York, household 219, line 2, sheet 27:

Michael Turley, value home $500/framed, age 33, born Ireland, melter of iron, naturalized citizen, owner of land, lived this city 1 year

Ann Turley, age 37, wife, born Ireland, alien, cannot read, lived this city 1 year

Andrew Turley, age 13, child, born Rockland NY, lived this city 1 year
Julia Ann Turley, age 11, child, born Orange NY, lived this city 1 year
James Turley, age 8, child, born Orange NY, lived this city 1 year
Michael Turley, age 1, child, born Steuben NY, lived this city 1 year
