Trying to determine correct name/spelling of my gr-grandmother's family from Louth. Her name is spelled numerous ways on documents in the USA, but it is something like Calladee or Kelladee. Her name was Annie Jane and I believe her parents were John Kelladee and Mary Carney. Annie Jane married in the USA in 1874, but I'm not sure when she arrived here.

If anyone know what this name is and its correct spelling, would you also know which Parish this family likely is from?

Thank you.

  • Kelledy is by far the most common version in the Co Louth area (there are 68 in the 1901 census) but Keledy and Killedy are also found in the civil indexes for that county. No Calladees.

These are generally anglicisations and since Irish names can be translated in different ways, the spellings will vary. In addition, generally people in Ireland in the 1800s weren?t much interested in how their name was spelled. (Many were not very literate, and it was often left to the whim of the priest or other official as to how it was spelled).  So for all these reasons you should expect to find variations.

You can see the various townlands where the Kelledy families lived in 1901 & 1911 using this link:

  • Thank you for this information -- having a correct spelling and some additional options will help me continue my search.

  • Hi

Just in case you are unaware of this site on Louth I am posting it, mainly census substitutes but plenty of Kelledy names on it.

    Good Luck
