I'm a Canadian and I'm new to searching my family tree but believe my great grandfather was John Daley (family name now Daly), born 1823 in Ireland - slim information indicates in Aglish. He emigrated to Canada, possibly through the U.S., we believe in 1854. He was married to a lady named Margaret (Jordan?) we believe in 1853.  I'm are looking for confirmation of this data and his parents' names and any other information possible. I'd appreciate any help and hope to make connections with family.

  • Hello Laurel, the period you are researching is prior to Civil Registration in Ireland in 1864 so you will have to rely on Church Records. www.rootsireland.ie (pay to view site) has Baptism/marriage records for Aglish but the baptisms begin in 1826 & marriages in 1821.
www.nationalarchives.ie has Griffith Valuation records & has 14 records in Aglish for Daly - christian names include Thomas, Martin, Owen, John, William, James, Michael.
These records dont give detailed information only place a person in a location usually period is mid 1850's.
There is a fairly comprehensive Tree online which gives Johns parents names as William Daly & Margaret Leahy & wife as Margaret Jones. It also lists Johns siblings & children.
    What was your grandfathers name?

  • Thank you so much for your quick response and information. It's exciting. I believe John Daly of Aglish was my great-grandfather. Your info about his wife's name matches info I have to date. My search in Canada is limited. I'm currently on vacation in the US so many of my records are at home. My father's family are all gone now since Dad passed away 2 years ago. My two cousins and I have no resources to research so I've begun my search through any means possible. I found a distant cousin's limited info which led me to Aglish. Your help is very encouraging.  I would like to know where you found the 'comprehensive Tree online'. The National Archives or Roots Ireland?  I'm very new to all of this so I'm not always sure I'm following the right leads. I truly appreciate your help. It's inspiring. Thank you.

  • My grandfather's name was Joseph Edward Daly (Daley) - born in Thamesville, Zone Township, Kent County, Province of Ontario in Canada  - Dec 1874 or 1876. His father appears to be John Daly, believed to have emigrated 1854 from Ireland (Aglish?) possibly to England before coming to Canada. He died in 1906 in Canada & is buried in the family plot in Thamesville.  His mother was Margaret (Leahy?). His wife was Margaret -appears to be Jones, born in England.  Her father was Edward Jones.
