I"m looking for Benedict Lucas, known to have lived in County Kerry, able to view the hills of killarney and vales of tralee which has been known. He sailed to America, have not been able to find the date but he served in the Revolutionary War here, and lived in the Backwoods of Pa.  I'm thinking about 1740? but not sure. any help would be appreciated. thank you

  • thanks so much for replying and offering to help. are you in Co. Kerry?

I think he was born about 1740, he had a wife Mary, over in Ireland but it seems she didn't come with him, if she died first or whatever I don't know.  He was in our revolutionary war but someone has said his wife was mary McKibben and people have run with that. Its not Mary McKibben, she was married to his son Jospeh. For that reason i am guessing his wife was Mary as well.  the only thing I can find is that he was a backwoodsman in Pa. when he came here, he loved his adopted country but missed the hills of Kilarney and Vales of tralee where he was from.  I have his will when he died, but that only mentions all his children. I am in this same family over here twice.  I have tracked the McKibben family to County Down and Hillsborough.Benedict had quite a bit of land over here during his life and quite a few kids. Its very hard to find anything going back  so far, nothing was really recorded.  You are the first that has offered to help.  I think his son Joseph was born before coming to this country but I haven't found the date they arrived.  any help would be greatly appreciate. Thank you so much, even if you can't find anything, I appreciate the offer.  I would love to find even distant relatives over there, it would be very cool.. thank you again, DEb

  • Hi Martine

if you would like to write me at my regular email, its deb1275@gmail.com

thanks so much for the offer of help.

Benedicts children were Jospeh born sept. 6, 1765 if thats right, also county Kerry.

Eustacia Ann Lucas born 1766 Ireland

Charles born 1768( this is also my line as I"m in this family twice) I have he was born in Centre Co. Pennsylvania

Baptist born 1771 Rachel born 1774

    James born1780

    William born 1788

John Born 1790 Benedict died 1826 In pennsylvania.

I have Jospeh Lucas the first born married Mary McKibben

Mary McKibbens parents were John McKibben  born 1728 county antrim and her mother was Sarah coburn born about 1730 in Hillsborough County Down, I don't hae Sarah's parents but I believe Johns father was a Joseph McKibben. I believe Johns wife was named Elizabeth.

its all so confusing as the same names are used over and over especially Joseph and Mary.

Its natural I"m sure for back then to take the names of parents and grandparents.

thanks so much for this. I have searched for years to get just what I have. I can't thank you enough. Deb

Dear Deb, Co. Antrim replied with the following information.Let me know if it helps,

    Martine

    Found this for clues: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jkhouser84&id=I57087

The site at irishtimes indicate Lucas in civil parrish Artrea, Co Derry and Tralee, Co Kerry, and show personal history on the name search, so there should be some familial connection. Apparently several lines emmigrated from the mid 1600's and continued on for over 100 years. In Pennsylvania "kissing cousins" married so maiden Lucas carried through on married name Lucas.

There are many, many free ebooks at google that give pretty good bio's of early residents of Pennsylvania. They were very much into recording everything in Pennsylvania through the mid 1800's. These pubs usually give pretty good detail on religious offerings for the are during many time periods as well. A search using the first and last names should pull the ebooks up. Sometimes you have to use the childrens name to find the data though.

Cemetery records, will have to be the way to go in Ireland for the Lucas family due to the early time period, which, if my understanding is right, will be to only a few limited Religous preferences.

If there were any birth family members left in Ireland, your poster might be able to establish through searches of more recent genealogy postings from this area, or by doing a blanket search through an ad in the respective local paper giving a contact email.

    Hope these suggestions help, Jeanette

  • Justin Houser has done extensive research at the Centre County Library in Pennsylvania, USA.  Here's a link to some of the research for Bendict Lucas...
