Any information on the Kane family would be very appreciated. I believe that my 3rd great grandfather to Mathias Kane (Cain) born around 1800 was married to a Mary Keane or a Margaret Dalton according to baptismal and marriage record of their son William.

Finding records in Co. Mayo back to the first part of the 19th century is very difficult. None of the parishes in North Mayo (where Ardagh is located) have records back that far. Ardagh RC parish baptismal records start in 1866 and marriages in 1882. Civil registration did not begin until 1864.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ardagh civil parish shows six Kane households in the following townlands: Cloonglasney, Slievenagark and Knockagillaun.  Perhaps your ancestors came from one of those townlands.

Have you considered DNA testing? If you have not tested, I would suggest a general test rather than the Y-DNA test which tracks the pure paternal line.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you very much for your reply. I will investigate those towns.

I have taken 2 different DNA tests and the 23andMe results show that ancestry appears to be strongest, as they put it in the following 10 regions: Counties, Dublin, Cork, Galway, Mayo, Kerry, Tipperary, Limerick, Leitrim, Monaghan, and Westmeath. I am assuming that the order listed is perhaps the strongest to the less strongest.

I also appreciate the reminder about the lack of records...I had been reminded of this before but had forgotten.

    Thank you again!

    Regards

    Jim
