I am searching for family of Peter Francis Patterson, born 11/17/1863 in County Mayo.  He had a twin sister and was one of 12 or 13 children.  He was raised as a Roman Catholic.  He immigrated to the United States between 1880 and 1883.  He lived in Massachusetts for some time.  He joined the U.S. Army in Boston, Mass. in 1889 and was stationed shortly thereafter in Rock Springs Wyoming.  His sister also immigrated to U.S., but I don't know if at the same time.  She stayed in Massachusetts for a longer time, but I do not know her name.  His death certificate does not list the names of his parents.  Griffiths Valuations lists Pattersons in the following parishes:  Ballysakeery (Cooneal), Crossmolina, Kilmoremoy, Ardaugh.  The 1901 census shows that Pattersons who are Roman Catholic lived in Castlebar Urban, Caraun, Tagheen, Claremorris & Balla.

  • Hi TraceIrishRoots - this sounds like a job for a professional geneologist, as there is a lot of choices and less info to go on. It would definitely help if you knew for certain if he was Catholic or Protestant as the Pattersons in the Ballina region were mainly Protestant as far as I know. There were Pattersons in Moygownagh, again Protestant and with relatives in Ballina, in the early 20th century.  If you get a geneologist to narrow down to the correct religion of him, & delve into the

    - Transit records from Ireland to USA 1880-1883

    - Valuation Books from Griffiths to 1885 in Mayo

That may reveal the family, especially as the 1880-1883 was the height of the land war in Mayo with familes choosing to emigrate also.

  • Dear Clare and Liam,

Thank you for your interest.  Yes, I do know for sure that he was Roman Catholic (he insisted that my grandfather and his brother become altar servers in the Rock Springs Catholic Church.)  Also, I have found some more information from my great uncle's notes.  Peter Francis' twin sister was name Katie.  The twins were the youngest in a family of 13 children.  Katie met and married an American man in Ireland then he took her to Germantown Pennsylvania.  She sent money to her twin Peter so that he too left Ireland and came to the United States sometime in the early 1860s.

  • I would suggest that the Patterson you are seeking may be in the Castlebar area, as I believe (I may be wrong) but the Pattersons in the North Mayo area at that time were Protestant.

Try (it is painstaking I know) looking at the Baptism Registers for those Parishes, taking the 1901 Census as a guide. The NLI have them on line or you can try http://www.rootsireland.ie/ which is a fee based resource but will cut your search down drastically.

    Best of luck
