My great grandfather, Martin Concannon, was born in 1837, I'm told.  He and Anne Walsh were married in Balla and had one child Patrick in Balla before emigrating to the United States.  I have found the baptism records for Anne and her 3 sisters, as well as Martin and Anne'sr son's, Patrick, baptism.

I have not found records for Martin's baptism.  Was he originally from Balla?  Did he join his in-laws in Balla after the wedding?

When he emigrated, Martin, Anne, baby Patrick and Anne's mother, Julia Jordan Walsh all emigrated together.  I know that Anne's father was Luke Walsh.

When I visited Balla a few years ago, I was unsuccessful in finding any information on Martin.

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with Martin Concannon's lineage.

  • Hi Charlotte,

Today I was looking through the parish records, I can't find Martin's baptismal records as we don't have his parents' names - do you know his father's first name and his mother's first & surname?  Then I can search more effectively.

We found that he and Anne Walsh marreid on the 26th of June 1862, and then had Patrick in 1863 on May 8th. His sponsors' were Pat & Bridget Cormick* (?). This may vary as the priest's writing was hard to decipher and the documents are old.

    Thank you,

    Kathryn

  • Hi, Kathryn,

I do not know the names of Martin and Patrick's parents.  I was hoping to be able to tie them together via both their birth records.  You are correct that Martin and Anne were married in 1862, followed by the birth of their son, Patrick, in May 1863.  Their names are the only clues I have in addition to the birthdate of Martin, Nov. 11, 1836.  The death record for Martin states that his father's name was Patrick, but I do not know how accurate this is. When I traveled to County Mayo a few years ago, I found no remaining family members in the area and could not access the parish records in Balla.  I talked to a lady in Castlebar whose name is Concannon but she did not know of any other Concannon lines in the Balla area.

Thank you for taking your time to research my great grandfather, Martin.

  • Charlotte,

I will have another look elsewhere, I'd love to find it out for you! However I won't be able to go back to the Church records until after Christmas, next week, because of Parish preparation.

I will get back to you as soon as possible!

    Happy Christmas!

  • Hello Martin ,

I hope you are well , Patrick Conannon came to England, from Mayo, last century and his son Malick (probably wrong spelling ) married my Grandfathers cousin Annie Elizabeth Clay and they had 3 children Mary, William and Elizabeth , there descendents are plentiful and we have many Connanons today around these parts ! All great craic and can sing and play any musical instrument they can hold !!

Patrick lives on , i am currently researching my family history and i will pass on some details of Patrick , if possible , i would love to know his birth place in Mayo . Do you live in Ireland ?

All the very best Bill Clay 07836 338330 wbclay @ btinternet.com
