I am descended from Patrick Joseph Walsh and Mary Agnes Jennings, both from Ballinrobe, who married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 1911. I have some information on the Jennings family from another relative who did some research in Ireland many years ago, but almost nothing on the Walshes. I know that Patrick Walsh had a brother Thomas and a sister Mary who also came to Philadelphia, and I have quite a bit of information on them after they came to the U.S., but I know almost nothing about their family back in Ireland. I am pretty sure their father's name was James, but that is about it, and I know nothing about their mother. I would love to know more!

Hi Erika,
You could try checking the 1901 census for Patrick's family. a useful link to the census information and other genealogy inofrmation can be found here: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
You could also investigate some of the other available sources, such as: Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm . Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. And you can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ .
Church records may also be of use to you. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. Catholic parish registers are available here: http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.
I wish you the best of luck with your research.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

Hi-- I have been searching for Walshes as well. It looks like we may be talking about the same family. My grandmother was Anna Walsh born to John and Kate ( Cunningham) Walsh. Per the 1901 census - Thomas, James Anna and Nora lived in Cloongowla. Are these the same as I thought per the 1911 Ireland cenus Thomas remained in Ireland and there is still family on the farm/cottage.
Please let me know if these are the same family-- glad to help and perhaps ask if you know of the other siblings.
Thank you,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen!
I don't think it's the exact same family, as my Thomas and Mary were already in Philadelphia by 1900, and I'm almost positive my Patrick's father was named James. I have looked for Patrick in the 1901 census, because he did not come to Philadelphia until 1906, but I have not been able to find him. It is entirely possible, though, that Patrick and Anna were cousins. If you happen to find that your John had a brother named James, who had children named Mary (b. 1873), Thomas (b. 1874) and Patrick (b. 1883), please let me know! I will definitely let you know if I find any connection to John and Kate.
Thanks for writing!
Best of luck,
Erika

Hi Erika,
I noticed you have an entry in 2013 regarding Walsh and Jennings, also mentioning that you have some Jennings family history.
Would you be able to share that with me, please, as I have been unable to find any information on Bridget Jennings, b 1802, Ballinrobe, who married Thomas Feeney in 1825 in Ballinrobe. They are my G-G-Grandparents who later came to Australia. Bridget's parents may have been John and Bridget.
I have asked on this parish page a few years back with no success.
Thanks,
Helen.
