My great grandfather Martin Kelley married Catherine Hammond in 1860 in Newport Chapel.  I have no records from the Burrishoole parrish.  I'd appreciate any help.  I am coming to Rosturk in late September 2012 to visit the area where my familiy lived (es)

  • My 3rd great-grandfather was named Martin Kelly from Rosturk.  This would be the grandfather of the Martin Kelly you are referring to.  I am also going to Rosturk in Sept after attending the Navy-Notre Dame Football game.  Maybe we will cross paths.

John,Tell me more.  How are you related to Martin Kelley husband of Catherine Hammond.  I am related to his daughter Anna who married Hugh Nolan.  Can you trace the Kelley's (Kelly"s) back before the marriage of Peter born 1807 married to Mary Bridget Mulgrew?  Unless you are staying in Ireland for a many weeks, we will miss each other.  We arrive on the 28th.  Thanks so much for writingKathy

  • Kathy,

Your Martin Kelly (married Catherine Hammond) was the oldest child of  Peter Kelly & Brigid Mulgrew and also my Great Grandfather's (John Peter Kelly) brother.   My understanding is that they both emigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1880s.  Peter Kelly's father was also named Martin--I dont have any more information about him or his wife.  He was obviously born sometime before 1800 and it doesnt appear that there are many records from that time.  I have been in touch with a man named Patrick Kelly currently living in Rosturk & I hope he can provide more information.  Sorry I will miss you--have a great trip.

  • OK, our family line splits at Peter's children.  I've been to Parsons PA and found Wells Street and St. Dominick's.  I went to Sacred Heart cemetery but could not find any grave stones. I assume the brother John Kelly mentioned is your great...grandfather.   I am related through Martin and Catherine's daughter Anna.  I never met her, she was my mother's mother.  My mom was the youngest of 8.  My grandmother, Anna Kelly and her sister Mary moved to Cleveland rather early after the migration to US.  Anna married Hugh Nolan, my mother's father.  My grandmother was illiterate, but my mom said she was really smart.  I'm copying two death notices on Martin which show that there was family still in Ireland.  I am so excited that you will be there right before me.  Of all my possible hereditary connections, I feel most like a Kelly.  I think the Notre Dame game is around the 3rd of September.  How long will you be in Ireland?  Please let me know if you make any connections.  If you're a Kelly, I assume you are a Notre Dame alum.  My grandmother is not mentioned in this obit, but is in Catherine's, I don't know why.

Martin Kelly, a well known resident of Parsons died at the home of his son, Martin Jr., shortly after midnight of pneumonia. He had been a resident of Parsons for over thirty years and was a member of St. Dominic's Church and the Holy Name Society of that Church. The following sons and daughters survive: Martin Jr., with whom he resided, Philip, also of Parsons; Patrick of Wilkes-Barre; Mrs. Patrick Hannon of Parsons; Mrs. Mary McNulty of Cleveland, Ohio; also one brother; John Kelley of Parsons, and a brother and three sisters in Ireland. The funeral will be held from the home of his son Martin at Parsons, Monday morning with a high mass of requiem in Sacred Heart Church in Plains, and interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Plains.

    Date: June 4, 1917

    Location: Pennsylvania

    Paper: Wilkes-Barre Times

The funeral of Martin Kelley was held from the home of his son, Martin Kelley Jr., on Welles avenue, Parsons, this morning at 9 o'clock. A high mass of requiem was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Plains and was very largely attended. Rev. J.J. Moffitt of Parsons, was celebrant of the mass. The pall bearers were: John, Charles and James Kelley of Parsons, Michael, Martin and James Kelley of Cleveland, Ohio, all nephews of the deceased. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plains.

  • Kathy,

I think you are right and we both descend from Peter which makes us us 3rd cousins.  I knew I had lots of Kelly cousins in Cleveland and met a few of them when I was growing up. One of them was named Joe Kelly & he was one of the last to come over here.  He had a lot of interesting stories about his days in Mayo

The John Kelly mentioned in the obituary was likely my grandfather--John Joseph Kelly because it says he is a nephew.

We will be in Ireland 9 Days--4 in Dublin for the game, then visiting Mayo, Galway, Clare & Kilkenny.  Sorry to disappoint you but I will most definately not be rooting for ND.  I am a USNA graduate and a career Marine, so there you have it.  However I root for ND every other day of the year!

While in Mayo I plan to visit Killeen cemetary which is where I believe that Peter & Brigid are buried--most likely in unmarked graves.  I will take lots of pictures & send you some if you would like.

Thanks for sharing--it is always a pleasure to meet someone who shares my passion for our heritage.

    John

  • My great grandmother was Mary Kelly referred to in a previous post. She married my great grandfather Patrick Howard McNulty and subsequently moved to Cleveland. They had eight children and three boarders according to the 1900 census. Their oldest, John was my grandfather. Another son, Patrick played baseball for the Cleveland Indians in the 1920s. I believe my great grandfather Patrick was born in Shraheens on the area known as Pike's Estate. Not sure of Patrick's parents yet. The Mulgrews and the Needhams were all part of their household in the States. I believe most of them came to the USA as part of Tuke's Blacksod Bay Immigration project.   The McNulty and Kellys lived on Detroit Court, Herman Avenue, and West 76th Street. A relative Edward Mulgrew was a parish priest in Cleveland at St Aloysius Church until his early death. My dad was also John(Jack) who played on a farm team for St Louis Cardinals before World War 2. Previously he had been a Golden Gloves Boxing Champ on the Westside of Cleveland. During the war, he served in the Army Air Corp. He died in 1958. He married my mother Evelyn McKendry who was born in Belfast, County Antrim.
