Hello,

I am looking for any information on Luke Coyne (Born circa 1765 in Newport, Co. Mayo, Ireland) & his wife Margaret McNally (Born circa 1770 - I'm not sure where she was born, but I'm assuming in Newport, Co. Mayo, or that vicinity).  One of their children, James Coyne (Born 1798 in Newport), is the one I am descended from, on my Mother's Father's side of the family.  It appears that Luke, Margaret, & their children emigrated to Canada at some point; I'm not sure of the date, but it would have to have been some time after 1798 - since James was born in Ireland.  If anyone has any information about this family, or any living relatives that may still be in Ireland, I'd appreciate it if you could message me.  I am hoping to visit Ireland someday, & visit the areas where my ancestors came from, so I'd like to have as much information as possible before my trip.  It would be lovely to know if I have any living relatives still in Ireland that I could connect with, as well.

Thank you very much!

  • Dear Wendy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

As you can see from the link below, Newport is in the Civil Parish of Burrishoole. Records for the corresponding RC parish of Newport begin in 1872. As this is the case, there will be no Newport parish records available for baptisms, marriages and deaths before this time. On the off-chance they were married elsewhere in Mayo, I checked on rootsireland.ie but couldn?t see a marriage for a Luke Coyne in that county

I see that there are 3 Coyne entries listed in Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864), however it would be difficult to know for sure, which if any are connected to your ancestor:

Have you thought about writing to any Coyne listings in the online phonebook or tried searching Ancestry.com for any mention of your ancestor?s name in member family trees or messages??

  • Hi,

There are a number of Coynes living in Burrishoole on the tithes, taken in 1832. There is a Luke listed as well. Look at this link.

  • James' brother Patrick is my great, great grandfather.

Patrick came to canada between 1840 and 1842 (based on the births of two of his children). Hope that helps.

    Good luck with your search.
