I am at my wits end... not really but definitely annoyed. Annoyed at my Mayo ancestors who obviously have morphed from the air. Would I be so lucky to have that capability!

All joking aside. My grandmother was MARIA DONNELLY ( b. July 18, 1866.  Died 1945 Huntington Station NY) of Kiltarnaght (Kiltarnet) Newport.

I know everything forward. But going back I only know her parents’ names: EDWARD DONNELLY  ( b. abt 1817 – d. abt 1897) and MARY LUNN ( b. abt 1833 – d. abt 1909)

It appears no one knows anything about EDWARD save that his father was PHELIM. Phelim is located in Tithe ( 1837) and Griffiths( 1857). None of the descendants of Mary's siblings know anything either. Edward is mentioned in Valuation  1858.

I have even requested the aid of a certified local genealogist to no avail.

There are a couple of other DONNELLY’s in Tithe  and Griffiths , but no identifying marker to say that they were related to my PHELIM / EDWARD.

And, it is so strange that we don’t have a mother for EDWARD.

It is also strange that my Irish cousins, in the UK  and in NY as well as my own father, never spoke of any DONNELLY… or even LUNN cousins.

Its as if  they were planted there magically.

How can that be? Though we are speaking early 1800's there should be some key somewhere.

I would like the following:

  • EDWARD DONNELLY's mother's name
  • Evidence of Edward’s birth / baptism… not just the fact that I am here
  • Siblings of EDWARD
  • Information about PHELIM
    • Where was he born
    • Wife
    • Siblings
    • Death

It’s not as if we have gone away.  The Donnelly’s still have a home in Kiltarnet.  I have walked that land.  I have visited the headstone in Burrishoole erected by my grandmother Mary / Maria.

I guess I am a hopelessly romantic researcher.  But I won’t give up.  Someone,  somewhere,  has a wee clue.  Do you?

I’ll be grateful for a thread.  Not afraid of research.  Nor am I concerned about “hidden secrets” or the like.

  • Mary:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately the baptismal/marriage records for Burrishoole/Newport RC parish do not begin until 1872. Likely earlier records were lost. This would explain why you can't find a record for Phelim or Edward except for the land records you located.

  • Hello Mary: I see on Ancestry that in 1908 Mary Lunn, householder of Newport P of Burrishoole appears in the Petty Sessions Registers applying for transfer of a publican's licence held by Ann Lunne to her own name for the premises situate at Georges St Town of Newport so in later times there are certainly Lunns there. You could maybe investigate whether generations of Lunns operated a pub in Newport. There are several other references in Ancestry so post a reply if you think this line of research could lead anywhere. Patricia, in Sydney Australia

  • Mary: Have you seen the entry for Phelim Donnelly, farmer (first guarantor) of Keltarnet in the Sustainability Loan Fund in 1843? Early in the 19th century th Irish Reproductive Loan Fund was created as a source of relief of poverty to provide small loans to the "industrious poor" - short term loans for capital or reproductive purposes such as purchasing fishing equipment, repairing sheds for curing fish or purchasing seeds for farmer. In that entry, associated names are Mart McDonagh of Sneeglboro (second guarantor) and what looks like Edmd Lacle (Borrower). These may be relatives of Phelim if they are  guaranteeing loans for Lacle. Patricia
