This is going to thrill my friend.  Her Dad had done a lot of genealogy on his family long before anything was digitized and online.  All his work has made it so easy for me to find information online.  Mary Howley (who emigrated to the US) was his mother.  She married a Martin Rouse and lived in Syracuse NY.

I have been searching for the same Howleys over the years too. We are of the same ancestry and I live in the area. I know the cottage where they were born  and raised (not the one referenced above, but nearby) and the graveyard (Kilmurry). Most of the family emigrated to the USA without trace unfortunately, until I found your post today. I know they had a connection to Syracuse and St. Paul and there was a priest in the family from Syracuse I think called Fr. Robert Howley in the 1950s.

Oh my goodness!! I am so excited to hear from you. As I said in my original posting, I am doing this research for a dear friend of mine.  Her father had done a tremendous amount of genealogical research (way before the internet and digitized information).

I would love to be able to put her in contact with her relatives in Mayo.  As I said Mary Howley was her grandmother.  When she emigrated she originally went to Pennsylvania, where I believe several of her older brothers were already.  She married a Martin Rouse in Pennsylvania and they moved to Syracuse NY.  Mary and Martin had two sons.  My friend's father Eugene Patrick Rouse and Martin Jr.  Martin Jr became a Passionist Priest who was known the rest of his life as Father Sylvan Rouse.

I will have to ask my friend if she remembers a Father Robert Howley in the family.  I know that Mary's younger sister Ann also lived in Syracuse.  Ann never married and became my friend's "second grandmother" after Mary died.

Again as I said in my original posting I know that one sister stayed in Ireland -- Bridget Howley who married a Peter Joyce and lived in Galway- I have to check my records to find the exact address.  Until my friend's mother died in 1997 she wrote on a regular basis to her husband's "Aunt B" as she was known.

To have a picture of the actual cottage where her grandmother lived would mean so much to my friend.

I never got to County Mayo or Crossmolina on my trip this past march.  A few circumstances required that I change my plans and had to opt for public transportation instead of driving.  The main being that my first day in Dublin my wallet was stolen out of my pocketbook so I didn't have a license or credit cards to rent the car.  Got the credit cards replaced but it was too late to rent the car!

Your post is very interesting. Peter and Bridget lived locally here. Peter was from Glenavenue. Their grand daughter, Laura, still lives in the area. I would be glad to pass along her contact details to her.

The cottage has really fallen into disrepair. It hasn't been lived in for probably close to 100 years. I will get a photo of it. I also have a photo of her great grandfather, Thomas.

I have some HOWLEY info, Co Sligo.  Winifred HOWLEY (1892-1976) m John MEER (1892-1955).  The MEERs lived in Sligo, mostly Attymass parish, some in Ardnaree (s side of Ballina); This John MEER was son of John MEER (1855-1916)+Ann WALSH (1857-1910). In 1901 he lived Mullaghawny, Mayo; in 1911 in Aclare, Sligo; he d 1916 Lancashire, England.

Libby,  I keep running into your posts and your Paullinbaby tree on Ancestry.com  Here you are again.  I am going to have to go back and review our prior emails.  Since we last communicated, I have found several DNA matches leading to Duffy/Golden that I think will lead to Franklin/Golden in Carrowtrasna.  Of course, I still need to figure out how the Goldens relate to my Hoban and Langan lines.

I also need to look at my Langan research, as I believe there is a Martin J. Langan, who emigrated to PA, who may have married an Ellen Howley.  I know I have conflicting death certificates (and I may be confusing two different Martin Langans), and I need to sort this out. 

Just wanted to say "hi".  Crossmolina and the area around Carrowtrasna are showing up frequently among my matches.

I apologize for not answering this before now.  No excuse really -- busy but then aren't we all?  My friend is Patricia Rouse Hunt, she lives in Syracuse.  Her grandmother Mary Howley who left and went to Pennsylvania with several siblings (some were already there I believe) married Martin Rouse.  They had 2 sons Eugene and Martin and then moved to the Syracuse area.

Her email is prhunt@syr.edu -- this is her only email which is a work email -- she works in the library at Syracuse University.

I know she would be thrilled to exchange information and receive pictures, if possible, of the area.  Her father had done a very extensive family tree and research long before the internet and her parents were in contact with family in Ireland -- I know her mother wrote to the Joyce's on a regular basis.  Unfortunately her mother died in 1997 and a lot of contact was lost.

So she is expecting to hear from you -- she knows what happened to all of Mary's siblings who came to the states and several moved to the Syracuse area.

I think one family that may give some clues for you is MUNNELLY or MANLEY (some families changed to). There are MUNNELLYs in Crossmolina all the way west in Belmullet & Geesale; east in Ballina; n to Kilcummin/Lacken and Carrowtrasna. Some emigrated to Syracuse NY area (sw 29 minutes to Skaneateles & east to Chenango Falls & Norwich NY.

Manley Field House was built at Syracuse University in 1960's, a big deal.

Some MANLEY & MUNNSLLY family emigrated to PA, NY, ON CAnada, IL,, WI, MD, MA and west in KS, UT, IA, also to England.

Back in Mayo, some of the HOWLEYs m DURKIN/DURCAN (DURKIN also connects to MANLEY/MUNNELLY). Thomas HOWLEY (1846-1891) + Anna DURKAN (1841-1901).b over in Sligo which might be Ballina town back then, as it was in both counties, split down the middle.

Bridget HOWLEY (Ot 1862-) b Tullysleva, which is close to Crossmolina. Parents Martin HOWLEY (1830-) + Mary REDINGTON (est 1830-). MUNNELLY's there also. They had son James 1859, Peter 1867, Mary 1869.

Patrick HOWLEY (1871-1896) + Margaret MALLOY (1865-1937) . Dau Bridget Ellen "Nellie" m John J DUFFY, emigrated to Boston, MA, USA.

Thomas Howley  dob 1856  married Mary Gallagher dob 1856.

Children

Anna Howley aka Aunt Ann  1902-1973.  Never married.    Died in Syracuse New York 

John Howley

Mary C Howley 1892-1957.  Married Martin Rouse 1892-1957.  Both died in Syracuse New York.  Two sons, Eugene my wife's father and Martin.  Martin became a Passionist priest and was known as Father Silvan Rouse.  

Michael Howley

Patrick Howley dob? Dod 1973. Syracuse New York.  Married Cecelia Fitzmaurice1893-1983. Had two children.  Patrick 1920-2005.  Mary  1920-2018.  Thomas  1924-1926.

Bridget Howley. Dob 1895.  Married to Peter Joyce

Thomas Howley 1901-1975.  Aka Uncle Tom.  Died in Syracuse New York.  Never married.

Margaret Howley. Dob 1904                                

The Rouse family immigrated to the US around 1840 and settled in and around Dushore Pennsylvania.

I would deeply appreciate any information on the Howley's if possible especially Thomas and Mary Gallagher lineage.

It's great hearing from you and Thank you for reaching out to me regarding the Howley family tree.  My wife's father (Eugene Rouse) mother was Mary Catherine Howley.  I traced her line in Ireland to her parents, Thomas Howley and Mary Gallagher and their children Mary's sibling. I started this process researching my family in Spain about 2 years ago and the natural progression was to add the Rouse and Howley.  The Rouses have been in the state since the 1850's.

My wife (your possible cousin) and I were born in Syracuse New York and moved to St. Louis Missouri in 1987.

My Great Grandad was Michael Howley Born 1852/1 in Belclate, Cloonascragh Ireland. He married my Grandma Mary Howley (O'Neil)
I have a Bridget Dunleary ( his niece) and his Auntie Mary I think she was called all living together in the 1901 Census.

Hi all,

I have some questions about a Mary Kate Howley from Belleek Castle Ballina, Mayo. I found a marriage record for December 19, 1861 marrying a Hugh McDermott in St. Mary's Cathedral in Dublin.  His residence was Dublin- hers specifically says Belleek Castle Mayo.  I have Hugh emigrating to the US and having a daughter in Toledo called Susan McDermott  born in 1866.  The 1910 census shows she was born in Toledo Ohio and both parents born in Ireland. I have Hugh McDermott in the 1870 census living in Toledo- but not with Mary Kate and not with Susan.  Now I'm wild with speculation- was this Mary Kate Howley running away to secretly Mary Hugh in Dublin? Was Susan really born in Ireland?  Looking forward to seeing if anyone has further connections or details.  Thanks.  Kelly

 

 

 

 

Now I am coming in with a wild card here with the Howley's of Ballintoughter, Killenaule, Co. Tipperary and an extension to that family being the Howley's of Richill,( Howley's Quay) Limerick and Richard Howley Gov. of Georgia 1780 then Attorney General until his death in 1784. These Howleys left Ballintogher, Co. Sligo before 1641 and two brothers married into the Kearney's of Cashel. Can anybody fill me in on the Howley Family of Ballintougher, Co. Sligo. ???.
