Hi
I am looking for info on my mothers family. My mother was Mary Bridget Quinn. She was born in Islandeady in 1923. She was the daughter of Patrick Quinn and Bridget Gavin. Her father was from Derrygowla and her mother was from Derrycooraun. Her brothers and sisters were Michael, Catherine, Thomas, Ann and Margaret. My mother left Ireland to undertake her Nurse training in Manchester with her sister Catherine (Kath). I know little of her life in Islandeady apart from that she was a farmers daughter and they had a well in their garden.
I visited Islandeady in 1973 with my mother when I was 11 years old. We stayed in Kilfea with a lady we called aunty Katie Murray. We visited the remains of my mothers family home where the well remained. My mother died in 2007. I would love to find out much more about her family and their origins.
Any info or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Cathy:
Below are links to the 1901 and 1911 census records for Patrick Quinn and Bridget Gavin. I have provided two sets of records for Bridget because there were two in Derrycooraun. One had a mother named Catherine, the other Mary. I would guess that Mary is correct but I'll leave that to you. Suggest you use www.familysearch.org to look for birth marriage and death index records for the prior generation. If you find a good index record, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy of the record.

Hi Roger
Thanks for the great links.
I know that Bridget had a brother named Michael. He drowned when he was a young adult in an expanse of water that was close to where they lived. Do you know if there is any way of finding out more about this tragic accident.
Thanks

Cathy:
I think you need a fairly exact date when Michael was drowned before you can look for more specifics.
Some sources would be the Mayo library http://www.mayolibrary.ie/en/home/index.aspx and the Western People and Mayo Champion newspapers.

Cathy,
We have some similar names, but no real connection. My father's Paternal grandfather, Michael Gavin, was from Co. Monaghan, around 1824. My father's maternal grandfather, Martin Patrick Murray, was born in Islandeady, Co. Mayo in 1865. He had a brother, james, who did not immigrate to the US, and I believe is buried in Clogher. Would be curious if "Aunty Katie Murray" was a decendent of James.
