Hello,

I am interested in finding out more about my roots in Roscommon and Mayo...

EGAN

My 2nd gg was Martin Egan of Lecarrow (1841-1915, son of John). He was married on 3 Dec 1872 to my 2nd gg Bridget Mulligan of Lurga (1849-1881, dtr of Pat). They gave birth to 4 children between 1874-1881, Mary, Catherine, John (my gg) and Patrick. Bridget died one week after the birth of Patrick due to "post partum haemorrhage". On 20 Feb 1882 Martin married Catherine Fitzgerald of Gowell (1865- ?, dtr of Edward). They gave birth to 6 children between 1885-1892, Bridget, Ellen, Anne, James, Michael and Edward.

I am currently working on the descendency of these Egan siblings and I am looking for information on: Catherine (b. 1876) I know that she had been in the States in 1903 when her brothers John and Patrick emigrated in 1903 from UK to US as her name and address Kate Egan 149 Lincoln Pl. Brooklyn, NY was listed on the passenger records. I have been unable to find any other trace of her and wonder if maybe she returned to Ireland? Mary, John and Anne settled in Brooklyn. Mary married a man named John Egan (lol). My gg John Egan married my gg Mary McDonnell (see details below) and Anne married Eugene Corbett. The other boys, Patrick, James, Michael and Edward went WEST and settled in Montana, working in the mines. I was recently able to connect with my new Montana cousins! I am unsure of the fate of Bridget (b. 1885) and Ellen (b. 1887).

McDonnell

My 2nd gg was Patrick Anthony McDonnell of Palmfield (1841-1903, son of Anthony). He was married on 21 Feb 1882 to my 2nd gg Winefred Gallagher of Lavey (1858-1931, dtr of Michael and Kate Regan). They gave birth to 7 children between 1883-1903, Mary, Katherine, Anthony, Beatrice, Patrick Joseph, Annie and Michael. Mary emigrated to US (Brooklyn) and married my gg John Egan (above) in 1912. Katherine stayed in Ireland and married John Sweeney. Anthony stayed in Ireland and married Norah O'Connor ( I am in contact with cousins) I think Beatrice stayed in Ireland or maybe UK and may have married a Regan? Patrick emigrated to Brooklyn and married Mary Ellen Quinn. I have no knowledge of Annie (b. 1896) or Michael (b. 1903).

Going back to the generation of my 2nd gg Patrick Anthony McDonnell, He had a sister named Ellen who married Thomas Vesey,  (Lecarrow) 25 Jan 1856 and a sister Bridget who married John Clossick, son of William (Faleens) 8 Feb 1873. I am sure there must have been other siblings. I am in contact with some of the Vesey cousins as they also came to Brooklyn.

My two aunts, a brother and myself have had our dna tested through ancestry.com and would love to hear from any others that may be in the system.

I would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of or is a descendent of any of the above families.

Thank you,

Aileen Murray Gallagher

  • Hi Aileen!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out! Hope all is well in New York state.

Let me contact Seamus Bermingham who is our parish liaison for Kilbeagh parish. He lives closer to Charlestown. Seamus and I are distantly related based on a DNA match. I'd be glad to help also but Seamus is closer to the action.

  • Aileen,

Catherine O'Donnell (1859-1942), sister of my great-grandfather Patrick O'Donnell, married John Egan (1855/6-1936) in 1886 in Carracastle, County Mayo.  Since Catherine died in Lecarrow, I'd guess John was either a younger brother of your Martin or a cousin.

16 years ago, I was contacted by a gg-grandson of Catherine and John, Colm McHugh of County Offaly, who was gathering info on his ancestry but we lost touch after he moved the following year.

  • Brendan, your John Egan's residence at the time of marriage was Copulcorragh and his father was James according to the rootsireland.ie extract from his civil marriage record.

Aileen, I just checked in here with a view to suggesting to Jim Murphy that he check out IrelandXO.  I was astonished to find that the last message posted was from his third cousin once removed and one of his closest DNA matches.

I was also about to refer Jim to Seamus Bermingham, only to discover that both have Brett ancestors from just across the county boundary in Broher, County Sligo.

  • I also have a John Joseph Egan "Jack" from LeCarrow, parents were Bryan Egan and Catherine Harrington. We connected with Seamus Bermingham, (who is related through DNA-4th cousin) while in Ireland last month and were able to determine another John Egan is a 4th cousin. We visited the cottage where Jack would have been born, quite a highlight.

  • Forgot to mention, Jack was my great-grandfather who immigrated, eventually settling near Brighton, Colorado where he had a dairy farm, and would ride into Denver every two weeks to sell his butter.

  • Message to Brendan O'Donnell -

I just saw that you live in Fairfax, Virginia. I lived in northern Virginia from 1964 to 2005, and I'm now in Delaware.

    Small world!

I might have some information that would be useful to you. I will pull it together and message you again this weekend.

  • Hi Aileen

I'm not descended from any of the above lines, however, I am very interested in Patrick's daughter, Bridget Mulligan of Lurga. I take it that she was Sabina, James and Thomas's sibling?

I believe Patrick was the brother of John Mulligan, both show on the Griffths valuation of Lurga upper subdividing an existing plot. Now I believe John was my 3rd great grandfather,

If this is correct, that would mean we share a common ancestor, the father of John and Patrick Mulligan

If you wish to discuss this please drop me a mail
