I recently discovered new information on my 2xgreat-grandfather John Hannigan(Hennigan). He was born 25 Dec 1872, emigrated to the US in 1893. His obituary in 1906 lists Patrick Hannigan and Agnes Johnson of Swinford, Co. Mayo as his parents. It seems that Agnes had already died, and Patrick remained in Ireland. I have found, in the 1901 census, a widower Patrick Henegan 55,in Cloonlara that may be the right family;with children Bridget 18, Sarah 16, Pat 15 and Maggie 12. In 1911 the ages are off a little, but seems to be the same family. Pat 72, Pat 24 and Maggie 19. I have been unable to find a birth/baptismal record for John or any information on Agnes' death. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

  • Further researching the family in Cloonlara, it seems the mother was Margaret McEntire by searching the other children's baptisms. So, probably not the correct Hennigan's.

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

John was born December 2 1870 and his civil record is below. You will have to sign-in to see the record which is at the bottom of the page. The mother was Atty Johnston according to the record. He had a sister Mary 1872, sister Attracta 1876 and brother Michael 1876. Michael's civil record shows the family in Castleroyan townland. Also Michael's record shows he was born in January 1877 but I think the family fudged the date because they were late registering the birth. Possibly his sister Attracta died?

The family was not in Castleroyan in the 1901 census.

  • Roger, Thank you so much for your help! Is Atty a nickname for Attracta?

  • Roger! I couldn't find my original thread but I found my cousin Jill's so I'll use this one. Do you know if Tom Hennigan has closed his centre? I believe you told me a while back that you knew him. I've tried calling but the number doesn't work. I'm coming over in August and was hoping to check out his centre. -Drew

Sorry! I don't know Tom Hennigan. By the way, I live in the States.
