Seeking to identify Howley/Ward relatives. I live in Minnesota (USA). I am in the process of researching family history in Ireland. My grandfather was Michael Howley (1873-1937). Michael’s brothers were Martin and Thomas and their parents were Thomas and Anne (Ward). The Howleys came from Cloondolough and the Wards came from Ballooclerhy. More recent family members were John and Margaret Conlon (Howley). If you know of any relatives of this family, please reply to let me know. Thank you!

Correction, Michael Howley died in 1927 (not 1937 as indicated in the original message).

Thomas:
I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located the baptismal/birth records for the three sons of Thomas and Anne who are mentioned in your message. I also located the marriage record but did not locate a death record for Anne. See links below. I did find a 1904 death record for Thomas. Many of the records show Ballinwincher as the "townland" but it may have been a place name within Cloondoolough townland which is where the Howley families were living in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

Thank you for these records, Roger! Do you have any suggestion on how to find more current data? I'm guessing if people are living there may be data privacy guidelines. How could I determine if anyone from this family is still living in Cloondolough or the areas nearby?

Thomas:
Yes, we are not allowed to look for people who are living. ( As an aside, I live in the States).
I pulled up the Kiltimagh RC parish newsletter. In the upper right hand corner, there is a contact for newsletter items. Maybe they would let you place an item in the newsletter indicating you are looking for Howleys from Cloondoolough and provide your e-mail address.

Hello Roger,
It's been quite a while since I last logged in. I applied for dual citizenship in Ireland last July. Today, I received an email indicating some of the information I submitted doesn't line up. Most importantly, I thought my grandfather's mother's name was Anne Ward - but his marriage and death records identify his mother as Margaret Nolan.
I was able to find information relating to a Howley family in Kiltimagh (which includes the parents, Thomas Howley and Anne Ward) and a birth record for Michael Howley, born in 1873.
My grandfather, however, was married in Canada and a 1911 census from Canada indicates he was 35 (which doesn't line up with being born in 1873 - he'd be 39).
My questions are: are these age variations significant? (They were mentioned by the Foreign Birth Registration Office, so I'm guessing they matter.) And I can find no connections with Margaret Nolan, even though she's listed as his mother on the marriage and death records. Is it possible Margaret Nolan wasn't his biological mother? I'm just not sure about this.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Tom

Tom:
Many immigrants made themselves younger or older when they came to their new country. Likely Michael made himself younger which explains the discrepancy. I can't explain Margaret Nolan. I can see on a death record that the informant had incorrect info. However, the marriage record does not make sense. Presumably, Michael knew his mother's maiden name. Did Martin and Thomas emigrate and can you find their death records?

Thomas stayed in Ireland and I believe Martin did as well (although I need to double-check). In fact, I visited Thomas' gravesite this past summer.
Margaret Nolan is the biggest mystery right now. It makes me wonder if I initially had the wrong information about place of birth.
