I'm trying to research my grandmother, Hannah Lally. My Dad wrote that she was always secretive about her background and he thought she was from Ballina - however, as far as I can tell, the only Hannah Lally of the right sort of age on the 1901 and 1911 censuses was from Knockshanbo, near Belmullet. Am I in the right parish here in Kilmore? She left Ireland while still a teenager and married my grandfather, John Carey from Glencullen Lower, in Northumberland (UK) in 1915. Any help trying to find my way around this would be much appreciated - we are coming over to the Belmullet area in May in the hope of finding out a bit more.

Oh wow, thanks so much for this, Roger! I'd found her in the census but hadn't been able to find a birth date. Have you got any ideas about what to do next, to try and find out if this is really my grandmother?

The Hannah I Mentioned is not right one for your family as she stayed in Belmullet.
But will keep trying for you as there were quite a few Hannah Lally here.

With the help of Phil we have managed to track my grandmother, Hannah Lally, from Pullacopple, Knockshanbo, to Devon where she was in service and then to Northumberland where she met and married my grandfather, John Carey from Glencullen Lower. Such an exciting journey! :)
