Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Do you know the name of the parish in Co. Mayo where Patrick was born/lived before he emigrated? Do you have documentation pertaining to Patrick that mentions any townland/parishes/villages/towns? It will be easier to find information if you can find the name of the parish.
Have you looked in to his emigration much? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew which city he entered you may be able to find some more information-and maybe even an exact place of origin. A good place to start is the US National Archives at http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
I did do a search for John Cosgrove in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records taken in Ireland between 1823 and 1838. Only one result was returned in Co. Mayo. The parish listed is Knock. Follow this link to the result:
Some other websites which may help you are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope that this helps. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
