I am coming to Ireland on August 15 and am visiting Sligo from August 29th to the 31st. I would like to complete some geneological work in finding my great grandparents John Conboy who was supposed to have married Anna Burns when she was only sixteen in Ireland. John died in the 1920's (1925) when he was close to 80 years old in New York State in the US. I have found them as a married couple in the US 1920 census but they do not appear in the 1910 census. I have tried to coordinate these findings with the Ireland census' in 1901, 1908 and 1911 and I have not been successful. Since they do not appear in the earlier US census' I can only guess that they were still in Ireland in 1910 and where married somewhere there as well. They were supposed to come from either County Sligo or Mayo accourding to old family stories. Their daughter Margaret born in 1898 was my Dad's Mom. He was born in NY in 1924 and she died at 24 years old in 1929 and is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in NY City. So if she was married when 16 she got married in 1921. I am also guessing that Margaret was born in Ireland because she was not in the 1910 US census.

I would appreciate anyones help of identifying  where John Conboy and his family came from and when he got married to Anna Burns.

    Here is some extra info that might help my search:

    In the 1930/1940 US Census the ages of the remaining children were

    Anna (mother) 40/54 (these ages are off by 4-5 years based on the census 10 year gap)

    Margaret (daughter) dead

    Anna (daughter)  17/dead

    Edward (Eddie) 15/25

    Thomas (Tommy) 12/23

    William (Billy) 10/21

    John (Johnny) dead

    Rita 7/17

    Lucille 5/15

     

    If anyone is related to me through any of these family members I would love to hear from them.

    I've had a bit of a chase with the Conboys with a lack of a result until I checked the 1910 census on ancestry (file too big to attach - sorry).

    I found the family there: John  aged 34 & Anna 24 children Maragret 5 John 3 & Agnes 1 month.

    There is a column which indicates where the person was born and where his/her parents were born.

    Both John & Anna were born in New York but both John's parents were born in Ireland.

    Both of Anna's parents were born in New York.

    John was 34 in 1910 so born about 1876.

    I then searched rootsireland births / baptisms for John Conboy born in Sligo 1876 + / - 2 years and got the attached match. However, when I searched all counties in 1876 + or - 1 year there were 10 matches!

    If you think the Sligo one is correct you can purchase it by registering at rootsireland.ie. This will give you the parents' names and the parish of the baptism.

    I've attached an ancestry record of a John Conboy marriage in New York in 1884 - annoyingly it doesn't have the spouse'e name and I couldn't find it on Family Search (the LDS site).

    Thanks for the help with these files. I think I have seen the same ancestry.com 1910 census but there is only one problem. My cousin and his other told me that John the father was near 80 when he died in the late 1920's and he had married Anna when he was around 60 years old. Based on the calculation of his age, John would have been born in the 1850 time frame. Since the 1930 census shows Anna being 40 and married when she was 16 she would have married him 24 years before 1930 or around 1906. 1884 would be very early for their marriage although he could have had another wife who had died. Nothing was ever said about this. Thanks again for all your help. I will keep my mind open and will look for further comunication from you.
