Hi, I'm trying to trace my great grand parent's parents.

My great grandmother was Bridget Kilbane b. abt 1885 d. 19/4/1997 age 101

Her husband was Thomas Corrigan b. abt 1885 d. 28/10/1956 - this is all the information I have for Thomas.

I am unable to find a marriage record.

They are both burried together in Achill Sound

They had 4 known Children:

My grandmother Bridget Agnes Corrigan (1928 - 2010)

Michael Corrigan (1922 - 1993)

Margaret Corrigan (1931)

Mary Corrigan (Abt. 1926 this is a guess - d. 2017)

I have no birth records for Michael or Mary

Bridget Kilbane (1885) may have been born on or her Father was from Achillbeg.

According to oral family history Bridget was the full cousin of the Boxer John Patrick (Johnny) Kilbane b. 9/4/1889 Cleveland, Ohio. His Father was John J Kilbane 1861 probably from Achill or Achillbeg (m. Mary Galagher, (b. USA )1889 Cleveland, Ohio)

This is information I found from a website dedicated to the Boxer - it may help trace Bridget Kilbane's (abt. 1885) parents and grandparents. I have not been able to find records to prove any of this but here's the information:

Johnny's paternal grandparents were John and Bridget Kilbane, Bridget Kilbane (Johnny's grandmother) was born Dec 24, 1847 in Ireland to Michael Haney and Cecilia Kilbane and died Sept 2 1911. Bridget had siblings Patrick Haney, Mary McCafferty, and Margaret McGinty

Johnny's paternal great grandfather was Martin (Brian) Kilbane

Bridget Kilbane and Thomas Corrigan (abt 1885) settled on Achill Island in Saulia Village which is where their children (listed above) were born.

I'd be grateful for any help you could give me or find any records as I've been hitting walls for a while now.

We've recently visited Achill and I have some great pictures - I'll upload them to the Mayo chronicles once I've gone as far back as possible.

Thanks,

Catherine

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you confirm if Bridget was born in 1885 or 1895. You have her dying in 1997 at age 101.

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and located a baptismal record for Thomas Corrigan (transcribed as Currigan). See below. Note location was shown as Saula.

I checked the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and could not find a civil marriage record.

  • I have both Corrigans and McNultys in my tree. Do you have a GedMatch number? My Corrigan connection is from my great grandfather Hugh Corrigan, (1858-1920) married Honor Connor and their daughter, Mary Catherine Corrigan (1890-1971) was my grandmother. Bridget (don't have a last name) married Thomas Connor 1811-1876.Bruidget was born in Ireland as was Thomas Connor. Her birth date is 1821 and she died in 1882 in Wigan, Lancashire, UK. I have DNA relatives still in Wigan who confirm this. I think she was from County Clare, at least they had some children there before immigarting to England. Ellen Corrigan (1864 birth) married Thomas McNulty in 1890. Again, there are DNA connectios there. Since you seem to have both Corrigan and McNulty ties, I wondered if we might be DNA matches. My GedMatch number is A407688

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you, you've helped me before on the Longford, Scully branch of my Family tree getting me back to 1821. I'm still researching but after a recent trip to Achill decided to try and figure out some my grandmother's history.

    Bridget Kilbane was b.1895

My Grandad did mention that on my grandmothers side there were two Mc names but he couldn't remember the full name so it's definately a possible record for Thomas Corrigan but Andrew isn't a name that I've seen in my family until my generation which would be unusual because of the naming traditions, that said I've not got a lot of people in this particular branch yet.

Are there any other children of Mary McNulty and Andrew Corrian/Currigan?

    Thanks,

    Catherine

  • Hi Sue,

I have an ancestry tree that I'm working on for the Kilbane/Corrigan branch its still very much a work in progress so I can't say for definate where the links are. From what I can gather a lot of Kilbanes married Corrigans so it's difficult to know.  I have records for a Hugh Corrigan abt. 1825 m. Margaret Kilbane, their children were Martin, Thomas and Julia, this was found in the 1851 census extracts. It's posssible that they had a later child, called Hugh also , possibly your great  grandfather.

I have a DNA kit here once I have the results I'll post them so we'll know if there's a match. In the mean time I'm in the process of going through baptism records if I find anything I'll let you know.

    Thanks for replying,

    Catherine

  • Hi again Roger,

If the Thomas found is my Thomas I have uncovered a lot of siblings from the 1901 and 1911 census so no need to check for baptisms.

  • I'm following this thread as I have the Kilbane name in my tree, & several DNA matches to McCafferty/Cafferky, yet I can't find how they fit into my tree. I have a 2nd g-aunt, Bridget Gallagher (b: 9/18/1884 in Saula), who married Edward Kilbane. My info (which comes mostly from family) says their children were Martin, Mary (who married Owen Gallagher), Julia (who married Tom  Linehan) Thomas & Patrick. That is the only info I have. Hopefully, someday this will all get straightened out!

    Thanks!

Andrew Corrigan and Mary McNulty had many childre. See 1911 census  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Achill/Salia/743602/

Unfortunately there are three Bridget Kilbane baptismal records in Achill parish in 1895 plus one in 1893 and another in 1896. The 1895 records are below.

  • Hi Katie,

It's a proper tangle! I've joined a facebook group called Achill diaspora, there's a lot of info on there and people from Achill replying to threads, the group admin is the guy who runs the tourist info on Achill, Vincent English he was really helpful when we visited. We also spoke to a local guy who said we were related to the Gallagers and family once lived ona smaller nearby island called Achillbeg.  I'll post anything I find out :)

  • Hi Roger,

    Thanks again!

I'll ask family for an exact DoB which might be able to help identify which baptism it is. She was definately 101 when she died on the 19th April 1997 which rules out the January Baptism as she'd have been 102.

Are there any parish records for a marriage between Bridget Kilbane and Thomas Corrigan/Curriagn you mentioned not being able to find a civil record and my own searches have uncovered zero.

It's really challenging trying to unpick Irish family history but very satisfying when you find a match!

  • Catherine:

Roots Ireland only has Achill RC parish records up to 1900. You may want to e-mail the parish office and see if they can assist.

  • Hi Sue, I finally managedto go 30mins without eating, drinking, smoking or brushing my teeth and my DNA results are back.(I feel like an achiever at this point!!) I've managed to upload my raw DNA from ancestry to GedMatch.com but it could take a little while for the results to show the matches and i'm just learning to navigate the site. My kit number is GF3074027 it's not showing any matches at the moment.
