I am looking for additional about a family of Swinford.  Names of those I want to find out more about are in BOLD

James Cullinan b abt 1815 County Clare, died 1893 Westport, County Mayo

James was RIC.  He was married to a Catherine??  Burke b. est 1820 died before abt 1867 (husband remarrried)

They had my ancestor Catherine Helena Cullinan who married a James Mc Gawley ( I have much on this couple and all of their children).  James was also RIC.

There may have been other children of James and Catherine.  Bridget? John?

James remarried a Mary Tyghe by abt 1867 and I show 2 children, Teressa and Emily.  Teressa died young and Emily took care of her father and married after he died in Westport .  She married a John Maguire (RIC) and they had a son John Joseph Maguire in abt 1896.  They also had 3 daughters and I do know what happened to them.

  • Hi, just wondering if the father's name should be John rather than James ?

The births for Terresa and Emalia both give their father's name as John, occupation RIC Constabulary. There's a good match for this John in RIC service records as Jno. Cullinan, county of birth Clare, signed up 1838, age 23 (b1815). His service number is  3198, and it seems he only served in Co. Mayo, the record also mentions that he is Catholic and married 21st October 1847, wife also born Co. Clare. He was pensioned in June 1873.

RootsIreland has a transcripts of two baptisms for a Catherine Cullinane/Culanan in 1848 and 1856, both Catholic and in Co. Mayo with parents John Cullinane and Mary Tighe - I have not been able to verify either of these in the NLI register images as yet.. if these are correct then it would appear that the first Catherine died young and they reused the name. Do you have an approximate year of birth for your Catherine ?

John & Emily married in Westport on the 8th October 1893, and son John Joseph was born James' Street, Westport on the 2nd March 1896.  He seems to be listed as Joseph on the 1901 census, and John Joseph in 1911. Marriage records on the free IrishGenealogy website cover up to 1941, so if he married somewher in the Republic of Ireland there should be a record in these.

  • I was able to locate a register image for one of the baptisms I mentioned – Catherine Cullinan baptised 19th September 1848 in Balla RC parish, parents John Cullinan and Mary Tighe. See right hand page about half way down.

Sponsors (Godparents) are William Foley[?] and Catherine Narrin[?]

The Catholic parish of Balla is in Co. Mayo and located to the south west of Swinford/Swineford. The town of Balla had a police station, see OSI map, so makes sense that John might have been posted there. The name of the town is pronounced without the 'a' ending and with a short 'l' - i.e. "Bal"

The other baptism was in the parish of Bangor/Aghoose which is not included in the NLI registers collection.

  • Thank you so much!!.  It looks like Burke is the wrong name that was listed on Catherine Cullinan McGawley's death record in Scotland.  I mistyped, the fathers name was John and was from County Clare.

According to the age on her death record, she was born about 1868, however she had to have been born ca 1858 as she married in 1875 and had a daughter in 1876.  I also located a Susan born to the Cullinan/Tyghe couple in 1868 in Foxford.

Now I have renewed hope of finding a cousin on my visit in August!

    Thank you again!!
