    What religious denomination?

    Here is the link to the RC church  http://www.rathkennyparish.ie/

    I don't see a C of I church in Rathkenny.

    If the family was RC, the National Library of Ireland plans to put all RC parish registers online later this summer for free searching.

  • HI  Marion;

    My family came from Kelleytown, Monknewtown, Meath. Mathrew Hughes(1771) and Bridget (Traynor) Hughes(1765). They had eight + children. All were baptized at Sy Marys Church, Grangegeeth or St Louis Church, Rathkenny  between 1797 and 1818. The two churches now form one parish I found all the baptismal records on Ancestry.com (Have to join) or view the original church records records. My Family actually lived in Monknewtown Civil parish but St Marys, Grangegeeth was a lot closer to walk. I found several Traynors living in the area and several other Hughes families.

    Search the Griffith Valuation Records(approx 1850) and they identify all the people, by Townland and Civil parish and it is free. Not only will it identify the people, it will also show where they all lived, size of farms, value of home etc. and much more.

    The Hughes' emigrated to Potsdam, New York area in 1827. There appears to have been many Meath immigrants living in immediate area and they never forgot their Meath Home. They named their first church St Mary's and when the first St Mary's burnt down in 1840 they built three new St Marys Churches. Today Potsdam, Canton, and Waddington (all 10 miles apart) have St Mary's churches and I think they were named after St Mary's in Grangegeeth..
