I'm a USA descendant of Nicholas Lawless (1805-1879) and Catherine McDermott (1817-1885) of Carlanstown Meath.  I know of his following children: James (1848-1925) Lawless, my ancestor, who emigrated in 1869-1872 to Morristown NJ USA and married Catherine Kelly (of Ballymaice Tallaght co. Dublin) here in USA // Christopher (1836-?) // Patrick (1841-?) // Mary (abt 1856?-?), who married Michael Bennett // Rose (1858-?), who married Patrick Masterson in IRL and emigrated afterward to Morristown NJ USA. There are gaps as well as duplicate names in the Kilbeg birth records on the Meath Heritage website, so my knowledge of this family is incomplete. I also wonder if the Lawless family still living in nearby Dunshaughlin co Meath are related.

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message on the Tallaght parish page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/tallaght-dublin

There are Roman Catholic church records available for Kilbeg. These date from 1817 for baptismal records and 1810 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4184, or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS), film 0926173. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

There are Roman Catholic church records available for Rathfarnham (part of the Tallaght parish). These date from 1777 for both baptismal and marriage records. Also includes newscuttings and parochial notes. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 8972, or the Dublin City Library and Archive (http://www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/FindALibrary/Pages/dublin_city_library_and_archive.aspx)

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

1802-06 Protestants in the parishes... includes many parishes including Kilbeg. The Irish Ancestor, 1973.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

Book by J. Fitzsimons, 'The Parish of Kilbeg', 1974.

Book by Noel French, 'Meath ancestors, a guide to sources for tracing your ancestors in Co. Meath', 1993.

Hopefully someone living in the local community will recognise the names and be able to help you further.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
