  • Hi Kiwi in Oxford . . . . Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . .

To properly try to identify . . your family . . of Plunketts . . . we would need a lot more info. from you

    Names, Dates, Relation(ships),Travel etc,etc, . . .

    That family name is there . . . in Meath . . in the 1901 // 1911 censuses . .  (see)

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Kilmessan/Ringle…

There are father Thomas , Mary (who in 1901 was an 18.y.o.working in the nearby 'big house' for Wikinson (56) not married)

    The brothers . . . James // Thomas  . . .

Further searches find . . . a James Plunkett ( similar age) moving around the E.Seaboard of Canada // U.S.

    A James Plunkett . . being married in New Zealand . . .

So . . until you provide more infill . . . we are unable to help further . . .

    Cheers . . .

  • Hello Eamonn, Thank you for the prompt reply.

Yes, that is our family. Of the children shown in 1901/1911 Teresa, Henrietta, Thomas and Mary all emmigrated to New Zealand just before or during WWI, the first two going first and Thomas and Mary following. James 'Jim' remined behind in the house in Ringlestown, he married later in life but had no children of his own. Patrick, who was Teresa's twin, appears to have married you and moved to another village. (1911 census) I am especially interested in whether anyone can help me with the parents, Thomas and Mary. On Thomas' census form it says that he was born in Dublin but there are a number of 'Thomas Plunkett' born in Dublin at that time and I have no information to work out which one is him. Also, I have no details for Mary Plunkett, what is her maiden name? Long shot but you never know. Thank you for this site, it is a wonderful resource. Susan

  • Hi Susan . . .

    I looked at ' Griffiths Valuation '(1847 - 1864) . . http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ . . .

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

This leads to JOHN Plunkett being on the land in those years . .

    Going back further . . we have . . ' The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 . . .

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

    The above leads me to " GEORGE " . . . with an interesting document attached . . wherein George in 1830 . . signing with his 'X' . . agrees to the terms involved. . .

    _____________________________________________________________________________

    Ancestry.Com . . in a search . . shows the Birth. .  in 1831 (recorded in Oldcastle.Co.Meath ) of a Geo.Plunkett (see)

    George Plunkett

in the Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958

Then . . if George is holding land in 1830 . . . it might be reasonable to suppose he was born about 1800   ??

searching this on Ancestry . . I find  . . the following birth in 1798   (see)

      George Plunkett

in the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915

        So Susan . . . None of the above is conclusive . . . but. . hopefully . . may assist you in your search . . .
