Has anyone got any connection to the Bonynge family of Meath.

I am trying to find out as much as I can about this family, dating from about 1750.

I have had DNA testing done and have had a match on this surname - which is the maiden name  of my 3rd Gt Grandmother, Alicia Bonynge born about 1820 but we have no idea of who her father is.  She came to England in time for the 1841 census as a married lady with my 3rd Gt Grandfather William Hamilton.  We know that William originates from Cavan.  The DNA match has a Bonynge timeline from about 1750 (!) and works about to be about 4/5th Cousin relationship - so I am thinking that the father to my Alicia is a sibling to the DNA matches 6th Gt Grandfather.

So really, if there is anyone who has any information on the Family surname Bonynge who lived in Meath from around 1750 (earlier as well!) I would appreciate any information whatsoever to piece together the puzzle, no matter how little that information is.

Thank you in advance.

This isn't news, I'm afraid - just an observation. I have spent some years trying to get a connection to my Irish origins, and one of the problems I encountered was the spelling of my surname (Boyne, these days), which was Boyan in the 1870s and Boyhan in the 1830s. I suggest it would be worth trying a number of spelling variants on the surname and relying on the given name to increase confidence in any results. If my experience is typical, it would not be wise even to assume that the name you are searching for has the same number of syllables as it appears to have from the current spelling!

    Best Wishes,

Chris Boyne or Boyan or Boyhan

  • Hello,

My maiden name is Bonynge and I have followed my ancestors back to Robert (1593 in Meath). We have several Alice Bonynges but haven't heard of one marrying a Hamilton in England YET. One of my cousins had her DNA tested and I am sure she will contact you because she has been notified of this post. If you have access to Ancestry we both have trees and if you don't contact me to get access. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Hi Harry, how exciting.

Where is your DNA?  I note you've done Ydna, so that is FtDNA, but have you tested anywhere else, autosomal?  My DNA is on Ftdna, AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, 23&Me and LivingDNA and I have other kits on Ancestry who all descend from our Ancestor Alicia Bonynge.  DNA has connected my family to the Bonynges of Ballintobber.  Charlene who has also commented in this thread is a font of knowledge on the Bonynges - welcome, now let's see if we share DNA !!!
