Hi. I have a Catherine Loan, daughter of Francis Loan (Lowin?) and Anne Lynch. Catherine was born 04 May 1813 at Oldcastle. She later married Thomas Mason 7 Nov 1808, also in Oldcastle. I believe that Thomas was the son of Thomas Mason and Elizabeth Byrne of Kells.  I have likely entries for Catherine and Thomas having children  in Dunboyne in the records - they and apparently had 8 (?) children, at least three of whom emmigrated to the USA.

Catharine is supposed to have had at least one sibling, a brother James, born 05 Sept 1816 at Oldcastle.

I am wondering if anyone might have a connection with these people, know any more about them, and if  anyone might know what they did for a living? I have seen one entry, for Thomas Mason (son of Thomas and Elizabeth) that was difficult to read, and seemed to indicate he was either a sailor or a tailor.

Thanks! - Nan

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

We exchanged information back in 2015 regarding your Masons.

The 1853 Griffiths Valuation has a Thomas Mason living in the town. If this is your ancestor likely he had a grocer, pub or some other business which might be tailoring.

I tried to find a directory online with no success. You may want to contact the Dunboyne branch library and see if they have any reference material which would pinpoint the occupation for Thomas.

We now have an XO Chronicles site where you can add the stories of your ancestors.

  • Nan,   I cannot help clearly, but the 1825 Tithe records for Oldcastle list 3 Lynch members ( Michael, Patt and John in Rahard and Clonifodd).  As well, there is a Richard Lownds and an unnamed Lownds living in the Parish.  I cannot return a birth for a Catherine Lowndes or Loan, but a Catherine LOWEN has one record between 1808 and 1818.   Lowndes is apparently an English name from 1066 name.  I have a member ancestor from Oldcastle (1830s), who also appears to have an English background, but perhaps 100 years before??   Mason returns no members for Oldcastle in 1825, but they do exist elsewhere within Meath. In Griffiths Valuations, there is a Thomas Mason in Dunboyne.
