I am researching the following ancestor and would appreciate any information or suggestions anyone may have to help me.

Thank you,

Helen Wyse

Canada

NAME Peter Foy or Foye

DATE OF BIRTH 1792 or 1793 (based on age  from attestation report of soldiers enlisted in Dublin, Ireland)

PLACE OF BIRTH County Meath, Rathoath (obtained from attestation

Parents and siblings unknown

Religion unknown

In 1818 he settled in Vaudreuil Township, Lower Canada (now Quebec) and on November 18, 1819 he married Eleanor Thomas at St. James Anglican Church, Vaudreuil, Quebec.  Their children: James Francis born 1820, William Thomas born 1822 and Peter born 1824, all born in Vaudreuil Township, Quebec (west of Montreal) then known as Lower Canada.

Military Records:

On Jan 15, 1811 he enlisted in the military in Dublin, Ireland and is listed as an 18 year old Labourer, birth place Rathoath, Meath.  The attestation report asks for “County, City or Town of birth place”  so it is possible that he was born in the town of Rathoath or in the parish of Rathoath.

Family lore suggests that he may have fought in the Battle of Waterloo but I cannot confirm that.  However, he served with the 100th Regiment of Foot (Prince Regent's County of Dublin Regiment), which in 1816 became the 99th Regiment of Foot.  It was disbanded in 1818.

From a military report of losses during battle by the 100th Regiment of Foot, I have been able to determine that he was located at the following:

- on July 5, 1814 he was serving under General Phineas Raille in Chippawa, Upper Canada (now Ontario).

-on October 20, 1814 he is recorded again in battle at Chippawa , Upper Canada.

-on December 19, 1815 he is recorded in battle at Fort Niagara, Upper Canada.

  • Hi Helen

I'm afraid the only birth/baptism record of Peter Foy (and surname variants) 1793 + - 10 years on www.rootsireland.ie/ is 1802 Dublin

    The parish is LUSK RC

    http://dublinnorth.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

It requires credit to view the full record which MAY have the parents' names but requires a subscription for those who have not previously purchased credit.

  • Col: Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me.  That cannot be my Peter Foy because he enlisted in the military in 1811 at age 18.  I will keep looking.  Thank you again.
