If you go to this link, you will see the status of C of I Parish registers. Unfortunately the records for Aghabog were destroyed in the 1922 fire at the Public Records Office in Dublin.

Thanks, Roger. Years ago, when I realised that the BDM records were not available, I gave up researching this family.

Now, though, I have a renewed purpose in searching them out. Ley and Lucas are the family names of the parents, but their children include Theophilus Clement Ley, and Edward/ Edmond Lucas Ley...names which appear in the Lucas/Clements of Rathberry, Co Cavan and Castle Shane of Co Monaghan. I am thinking that perhaps Elizabeth LUCAS was a younger daughter of this family. Time will tell, I m sure. Today I searched Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, 1899. A little later than my family, but the history lines given are impressive, if not just a little biased to the male inheritor. (I guess my branch will be "and others").

Francis Ley and Elizabeth (Lucas) Ley are my G.G.G. grandparents. They lived at a proberty called "Glen Allbyn" Paterson NSW Australia. Francis Ley died 26th May 1839. Elizabeth died 1858.  My line is through their daughter Olivia Lucas Ley .  I am happy to give any information from my line of the family. Also I am very interested in history of this family

Hi Meg and Lorraine, I have spent a bit of time researching the family since September and have a bit more information on Ley and Lucas families...too much to post here.  If you send me your email address to : sandiehill888@westnet.com.au  I will send you a link to download the information and documents from Dropbox. 

I will not be posting to Ancestry at this stage and would ask if you download that you don't post this publicly on Ancestry, Geni or any other internet sites. 

My reasoning: Too many trees are just copied without researchers actually verifying the information or publishing sources. Many trees are copied with errors and these are speedily replicated, so the majority of trees are accepted as accurate when they are in reality faulty.

I would love to know more about the family name LEY as well. My family is Fitzpatrick from townland Carn Parish Aghabog and County Monaghan. They were renters on the Ker Estate of Newbliss, but the Clogher Record printed the rent rolls of the Ker Estate in the early 1800's and they indicate that my Fitzpatricks held a lease for the life = 35 years of a William Ker.

The reason I am interested is because I believe my Fitzpatricks in Aghabog may have followed the land available from their landlords like Ley and Ker, which might help me trace the family back beyond early 1800's  by matching the history of the landlords (Ley and Ker) with the concentrations of Fitzpatrick families on their estates. Does that make sense?

Anyway, my research indicates that the Ley or Leigh name goes back to the original protestant plantations in Northern Ireland. In fact The original Leigh was granted his land by Oliver Cromwell if I'm not mistaken.

Francis William Ley and Elizabeth Lucas are my 4G grandparents and I would be interested in any information of the family prior to them coming to Australia in 1833. Their daughter Olivia Lucas Ley is my line. She married John Flaherty.

I am interested in these families because, one

 Michael Goold Terry born in Aghada, Cork in 1781 married in  1806, Anne Ley of Leysborough in the Clogher Diocese. His sister in law, Elizabeth Ley was married to Francis Lucas of Castleshane. Michael was a lieutenant in the City of Cork militia at the time of his marriage. I think he lived in Monaghan for several years from 1806. In 1812 he was a plaintiff in a case with Francis Lucas and Edward Lucas against John Kelly defendant. 

Anne Terry was a witness to a deed in 1823 relating to her sister Elizabeth and brother in law Francis Lucas.
