I am a descendant of John Butler and have been able to trace his Canadian born children through to myself. I am hoping that someone might know who his mother or father were, or could suggest a path that might lead me in a direction to try and determine this. As he was married in the Anglican Church in Canada in 1845, I believe that would be his religion back in Ireland. It is possible that.

His father was apparently born in Aughabog and may have been a schoolteacher there. If anyone can help me I would be forever grateful.

  • Statutory birth registration didn’t start in Ireland till 1864 so you won’t find a birth certificate for John. For births prior to 1864 you normally rely on church records, where they exist. Sadly in this case, the early Church of Ireland records for Aghabog were destroyed in the 1922 fire in Dublin and they now have nothing prior to 1877.

  • Thank you Elwyn, I was aware of the fire and was hoping for another path to solve this mystery. I called the church in Canada where John Butler was married hoping that the names of his parents might be in the records, but not to be. Do you think that there could be a gravestone in an Ahgabog churchyard to mark the resting place of John's parents? Other than that, I have no other ideas to progress further. I have had a lot of fun getting to this point, but may have reached the end of the road. :)

  • Paul,

The majority of the population couldn't afford gravestones and most were buried without one. However farmers and schoolteachers were better off and they often did have gravestones. It's worth a try. I am not local to the area and don't know if the graveyards in Aghabog have had their gravestone inscriptions put on line.
