My ancestor came from Currin/Curran, Co Monoghan, Ireland according to her immigration papers.  She arrived in Australia per the John Knox in April 1850 having departed Plymouth in December 1849.  She was under the Orphan Program as both her parents were dead at this time.  She was born in Currin on 23/3/1834 to Patrick and Ellen Fay/Foy.

Any assistance that could be given re her time in Ireland or details on her parents or possible siblings, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jo

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC records for Currin/Drumully RC parish start in late 1844  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0300   Do you have a baptismal record for Catherine or was the March 23rd 1834 date of birth passed down orally?

  • Roger,

Her birthday was passed down.  She arrived in Australia aboard the John Knox on 29th April 1850 and would have had her 16th birthday on the voyage out.  It is rumoured that she had a younger brother who left for Canada about the same time that she left for Australia - 6th December 1849.

    Thanks for your response.

Lets try this link https://registers.nli.ie/parishes?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=Currin+%28Diocese+of…;     You will get two parishes. The first one is Currin. Let me know if you still get the 404.
