  • Hi Karen

    There are 2 baptism records for Robert Hanna 1820 + - 6 years in Monaghan; 1 is 1815 & the other 1826

Neither record is from Drum Currin however

There are 2 matches for Eliza Crawford 1815 and 1820; 1820 is Eliza 1815 is Elizabeth; neither from Drum Currin

You may need to purchase 1 of the above records if you want to find siblings of Eliza's as there are 68 Crawfords born 1820 + - 10 years in Monaghan; same for Hanna as there are 17

However there is no guarantee the aprents' names will be on the baptismal record which is the only way I can see to find the siblings - search with a parent's name narrow the number of matches

  • The Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast keeps career and personal details of all Presbyterian Ministers in Ireland (excluding secession churches). They may be able to provide you with some family information on the 2 Ministers, especially Roaring Hugh whose life seems likely to be well documented.

  • thankyou for the replies

if someone said they were from Drum Co Monaghan in 1900

would this be a broad term!

for example would drumogle also be considered to be of Drum

if so what other name places would be considered of Drum!

    thankyou

  • In my opinion, Drum would only mean the townland of that name. It wouldn?t be a shortened version of any other townland.

In Griffiths for 1858 there?s a Rev JD Crawford in Drum, who had an ?office? ie outbuildings there. No other Crawford or Hanna families, though that doesn?t mean they weren?t there as not everyone was listed.

There are  2 Presbyterian churches in the area (1st Drum & 2nd Drum) but unfortunately neither has any baptisms prior to 1867. Their marriages start in 1845 for both churches,

I searched for the marriage 1845 to 1852 (anywhere in Ireland) but cannot see it listed in the Irish civil indexes. Possibly they married before April 1845.

  • Eliza[beth] Crawford was the daughter of John Crawford  & Jane Dawson.  John died 30 May 1851 and Jane 01 February 1890.  Both were buried in Kilcrow Churchyard, Co Monaghan.

Robert Hanna married Eliza Crawford circa 1840 and they had eleven children. The family immigrated to New Zealand from Ireland in 1864, sailing on an immigrant ship called the "Ganges". The "Ganges" sailed from Queenstown, now C?bh, the port for Cork, on 03 November 1864 and dropped anchor off Queen's Wharf, Auckland, NZ at 1900 hours on 14 February 1865. The Hanna's youngest child Phoebe, aged about 10 months, died onboard the ship on the way out to New Zealand. Two adults and 54 children also died during the voyage. Because of the large number of deaths, there was a commission of enquiry when the ship reached Auckland as to why so many children had died on the voyage out: the enquiry seems to have been something of a whitewash.

    Eliza had 8 known siblings:

~~Sibling 1.  REV. DR. JAMES DAWSON CRAWFORD, b. 22 Mar 1825, Drumgole, Co. Monaghan, Ireland.; d. 05 Oct 1902, University Street, Belfast, N. Ireland.; m. MARY ALICE SLOPER; b. 1856, Dalston, London.

The following information is  from a hand-written entry in an old ledger held by The Historical Society of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Church House, Fisherwick Place, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
    "J. D. Crawford. Born Drumgole 1825.
Educated at Old College, Belfast and Assembly's College, Belfast. General Certificate 1846. A keen controversialist, ready debater, and took considerable part in the discussions of the General Assembly."

  • I would like to join this posting, on the offchance my Susanna Crawford belongs to these families.

Susannah married my Thomas Plunkett in 1800 in the old church Killeevan. Thomas was born Monaghan, c 1775

    as per his Army papers.

Thomas had a brother James who was living in Belfast, in the 1830's along with their father, name unknown unfortunately.

James first wife died in 1868 and her will was proved by Rev Hugh Hanna of Belfast, so I am seriously hoping I fit in here somehow. cheers penne
