Hi,

I am traveling to Ireland for the first time in 3 weeks. I hope to visit my ancestoral town in Donaghmoyne. I know that my 3grgrandmother Elizabeth (MacMahon) returned to Irealnd from the States sometime between 1850-1863. She returned with her son, Patrick Jr. (b. 1832) who married Mary Callan inJan 1863. I have a record of Elizabeth (McMahon) Finnegan having moved back to Thornford or Achadreenan. I would be honored if any one has any information about the church where they may have worshipped or the cemetery where I might find them. Patrick Jr. had 9 children in Ireland. All of their sons died young, but, 3 of the girls married. Their names were: Ellen (Finnegan) Cunningham, b. Dec. 9, 1876. I don't have any information on children for them. The next daughter was Elizabeth (Finnegan) Caulfield, b. March 19, 1880. I don't hava any information on children for them. I have information that Elizabeth was living in Drumgarra, Tullyhahinera in 1918.The next daughter was Catherine(Finnegan) Ryan, b. Jan 5, 1835-d. Feb 13, 1915, She and Michael Ryan married on March 29, 1864. He was born on Oct. 26, 1836-d. Feb. 22, 1906. The Ryans had 6 children, which I have info on, but, that would make this message very long! I have the most recent Ryan, William, b. nov. 16, 1872, married Anne Odea. He died Jan 11, 1949, She died Jun 21, 1962. I would be interested if anyone has any information on this family! If I can find out a church and cemetery by the time I get to Monaghan in 3 weeks, I would be most excited and appreciative!

Thank-you to anyone that can help!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, we do not have any parish liaisons in Co. Monaghan. I did find the church in Donaghmoyne and it is St. Lastra's. http://donaghmoyne.com/churches/    There should be an e-mail address somewhere on the parish newsletter. Maybe you can contact them to find out about the church in the latter part of the 19th century and the cemeteries in the area.

I located the townland of Aghadreenan in Donaghmoynce civil parish but did not find a Thornford. It could be a place name and not an official townland. However, when I looked up Aghadreenan on Google Maps, there was Thornfor just to the northwest of Aghadreenan. Aghadreenan is about six miles north of Donaghmoyne.

I looked for some of your ancestors in the 1901 census but did not find them.

Let me know how else I can assist and have a great trip!
