Do you have any other information on Michael? Do you know his parents? names, or the names of any siblings he may have had?

If you do you could try searching for them in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. Although these do not offer any genealogical information, they can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Have you already tried looking for some record of the family at www.familysearch.org ? This is a huge database of genealogical records including some birth and marriages in Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie also have a huge collection of Irish records available, however you have to pay to use this site.

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so if you know the names of any family that remained in Ireland you may be able to find some record of them in these records, which would give you a more specific place name in Monaghan. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin, here is their website:

Have you tried looking into their emigration? Sometimes more inforamtion was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure so this may be a place to find more information. A website which may be helpful is:
