This post is an edit/correction to an old post where I thought I discovered a link from the 1901/1911 Irish census records to a Catherine Cosgrove (widow) and her son Patrick Cosgrove of the townland Drumee in the Electoral Division of Newbliss, in the Civil Parish of Killeevan, in the Barony of Dartree in County Monaghan. Upon visiting the McGuigan family in Drumee, I discovered that the Catherine Cosgrove of Drumee had the maiden name BERRY and her son Patrick's father was William Cosgrove. My great grandmother Catherine Cosgrove's maiden name was MCCAUL (also a widow at the time) and her son Patrick's father was also Patrick and they were from Crossbane (spelled Crossbawn or Crossbaun in early records) which is two townlands distant from Drumee in the same ED, parish, and barony. There is a chance that William and Patrick were brothers as a William Cosgrove is listed as godfather to Patrick, Jr.'s siblings John, and my grandfather, Edward.
There is evidence of Cosgroves and McCauls living in Crossbane going back to the Tithe Applotment records of 1825. Of the first three children of Patrick Cosgrove and Catherine McCaul, two were born in Crossbane and one in the nearby townland of Corlougharoe which at the time was the estate of Richard Mayne. The family evidently moved over the border to County Fermanagh with the remaining children being born in not-too-distant Moleena or Farmhill. Their last child, Francis, was born in Lisnagore in County Monaghan so I believe the connection to family in the Killeevan Parish was strong. Of their 11 children, seven emigrated to the United States. I am searching for as much information as I can about those who stayed in Ireland including correct death records of the parents and information about more distant ancestors which is difficult due to the time period, the lack of digitized records, and the duplication and similarities in Irish forenames.
Any clues would be appreciated.

You can use www.familysearch.org ( a free site) to look for civil birth, marriage, death index records and then write to the GRO to get copies of the records for around 4 euros each. I use a subscription site www.findmypast.ie to search for civil index records.

Drumee is in the parish of Killeevan. According to this site, the earliest baptism records start in 1836, so that might not be early enough to get your grandfather?s baptism, in which case it?ll probably not be possible to establish exactly when he was born. (Statutory birth registration didn?t start till 1864).

Records indicate that my great-grandparents Patrick Cosgrove and Catherine McCaul had children on either side of the Monaghan/Fermanagh border. Based on this fact, I would assume that my great-grandfather had to follow work opportunities where found. I have visited Clones, so I know that the Fermanaugh border is very close. Here is what I have learned about the children born to them:

Edward Joseph Cosgrove [my grandfather] born/baptised in ?, 1875
Mick Cosgrove born/baptised in Registration District: Clones, 1 Sept.1875
Bernard Cosgrove born/baptised in ?, 11 Jan. 1877
John Cosgrove born/baptised in ?, 23 July 1878
Rose Cosgrove born/baptised in Moleena, Co. Fermanaugh, 9 June 1883
I don't have a death record for Patrick the father, but Patrick the son is found living with his mother in Drumee in both the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses. Catherine died on 30 Nov. 1914.

Two possible deaths for the father Patrick Cosgrove, both registered in Clones. Jul ? Sept 1866 Vol 3, page 81, est year of birth 1834. Or Apr ? Jun 1899 Vol 3, page 80, est year of birth 1840. You would need to order one or both certs to find out which is the correct one for your Patrick.
You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, quarter (where there is one), volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. You don?t need to fill them all in if you have the reference details. http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Tick the relevant box on the form.
