I am looking for information on parents or siblings of Thomas Malone born in Kileevan in 1807. I have information on Thomas himself who married Elizabeth Roderick (from Castle Ward, Northumberland, England).

Thomas served in the 39 Regiment of the British Army from 1825 for 22 years. He had service in New South Wales, Australia from 1826 to 1832 and India from 1832 to 1847. Thomas served as a private and was awared two Good Conduct Awards while in India.

It is thought that he and Elizabeth Roderick had seven children, five being born in India or Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and two in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Thomas and Elizabeth and five children sailed from Calcutta on the Johanne Searkies in Auguest 1849 and arrived in Hobart during November 1849.

Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter, Annie (born in Ceylon) married John Bowes in Tasmania, Australia and they are my direct ancestors. My mother's maiden name is Bowes.Thomas died in Tasmania in 1877.

Would very much appreciate any further information on Thomas Malone or his family.

Kind regards

Alison

    Hi Alison,

Thank you very much for your message and for posting this information on the message board. No doubt, this will be very helpful to someone who is researching similar lines.

Civil registration did not become mandatory in Ireland until 1864, as a result in order to find Thomas? birth record you will have to look at church records.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Killeevan parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Monaghan&parish=Killeevan&churchid=283

If Thomas followed the Church of Ireland check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ for inforamtion on what records are available.

There are some online sites that give access to some records:

www.familysearch.org has a huge collection of genealogical records including some birth and marriage records from Ireland

www.rootsireland.ie has a vast collection of Irish records, however you have to pay to use this website.

You could also try contacting Monaghan Genealogy Centre for assistance, as they may have copies of records. However, a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

    Monaghan Genealogy,

    6 Tully,

    Monaghan.

    Email: theomcmahon@eircom.net

I hope that this is helpful.

    Kind regards,
