Hi. I'm searching for information on my 4th great grandfather, Robert Riddell and the Riddell clan in Monaghan county. What I know is that he was both in Monaghan county about 1797 and died in Pennsylvania in 1874. He emigrated to America around 1818. He married Mary Brittain (my 4th great grandmother) in America. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I've looked through the History of the Ancient Ryedales but have found nothing conculsive that would match Robert.

Thanks,

Stephen Bernas

  • Dear Stephen

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.

The only baptism I could locate was in the parish of Donagh, Co. Monaghan for a Robert baptised in 1803. How sure are you of the year of birth and do you know Robert's religion, the Robert in above 1803 record was Church of Ireland

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm as sure as census records can be regarding a date of birth. He was pretty consistent from 1850 - 1870 with indicating his age that would make his date of birth 1793 or 1797. The only real information other than census records I have is the attached which talks about one of his grand children (my 3rd great uncle) and mentiond a few things about Robert. It indicated he was born in Northern Ireland. Some other researcher had indicated that he came from Mona county in Ireland which I figured is Monaghan county but I really don't know if that is accurate. As for religion, I don't know what he was but his grandson (my 2nd great grandfather) was Methodist. Since his mother was Lutheran I would assume that his dad and in tern Robert where some form of Protestants.

  • Hi again

Mona could mean Monaghan and as one of the counties of Ulster would fit location-wise. In lieu of additional info it might be a good next step to add his details to our Chronicles Project. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others and perhaps a connection or link might result.

    Best wishes
