  • Murray is a common name in Co Monaghan. Ideally you need some more information about him to try and narrow the search. Usual sources are censuses, gravestones, will, obituaries, military records and marriage or death certificates.

In the 1901 census there were 519 people of that surname in the county (nearly all RC). George?s birth is well before the start of statutory registration and so you will be reliant on church records (where they survive) to try and find his baptism. There?s about 21 parishes in Co Monaghan. You may have to work your way through all the records. Unfortunately many of the parishes don?t have records that go back to 1815 so may not be able to find his baptism at all.

Based on family naming patterns, I searched for George Murray in the 1901 census (in the hope that any George alive then might be connected to your George) and there were two (in Drumgoosat townland, parish of Magheracloone, and Killatten parish of Tedavnet). Unfortunately the Magheracloone records don?t start till 1826, and the Tedavnet records till 1836. So you won?t be able to check them out.
