Anna Sherry b. abt 1830/1833 md. Henry McQuaid in Tedavnet parish 22 Nov 1852. He was from Rosslea in County Fermanagh. They had 8 children that I know of. They resided in Townland of Allagesh.

Maria  chr. 3 jan 1853,

Annie b. 24 Jun 1856 (chr 26 Jun 1856)  (James Sherry is sponsor)

William b. 1858/1861

James b. 1859/1861

John b. 1862/1864

Ellen b. 16 Jul 1866

Henry James b. 14 Jun 1868

Margaret b. 1870

I am looking for information on these children and their descendents. BUT MOSTLY looking for parents of Anna Sherry.and her siblings.

There is a John Sherry with wife Catherine Trenor (Treanor) who also live in Allagesh. They have 7 children. Can anyone tie John to my Anna Sherry?

There is a Patrick Sherry with wife Catherine McKeever (McIvor) who also live in Allagesh. They have four children. Can anyone tie this Patrick to my Anna Sherry?

There is a Thomas Sherry with wife Ellen Corrigan who also live in Allagesh. They have one daughter. Can anyone tie this Thomas to my Anna Sherry?

Any help appreciated. I'd love to correspond with anyone else researching these families.

  • Hi Joe,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone researching these people makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime have you tried looking in church records for Anne?s birth record to find her parents names? Do you know the family's religious denomination?

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Tedavnet parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Monaghan&parish=Tydavnet&churchid=319

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

  • hi,

There were a lot of SHERRYs in Tedavnet c.1860.

But only 2 of them farmed in Allegesh, John and Thomas.

There are Church records for the Parish of Tedavnet which record marriages that took place 1823-1880, Births 1835-1880, and Deaths 1825-1927.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/monaghanrc.htm

You would need to contact the Church to order any records.

  • Hi, I am also a descendant of the Sherry family of Tydavnet. My direct line comes from James Sherry b. in 1799 or 1800 near Scotstown, Tydavnet. Source: http://www.islandregister.com/sherry1.html James Sherry immigrated to PEI, Canada (year unknown) and died after 1881 in Summerside, PEI, Canada. James was married to Sarah (Sally) Caulfield, also born in Co. Monaghan. I would love to connect with other Sherry descendants, and I would like to learn more about the origins of James Sherry's family, if possible.

    Kind regards,

    Georgette

  • Georgette,

I have your family in my research files. James Sherry born about 1799 md 1823 to Sarah Caulfield. Family went to PEI.

I show 7 children, the first 6 born in Ireland and the last born in PEI. I have nothing on his or her parents. You can access my detail on familysearch.org.

I have tried to organize and group most of the Sherry families that lived in Tyavnet parish in an attempt to try to find my Anne Sherry's parents. I have reasonable guesses but no real proof. If you need info on other Sherry families in the area  I probably have detail on them. But with the parish register starting births in 1835 and marriages in 1825 there is not much detail earlier than that.

Hoping someone will have a link some day. probably you are in the same position.

    Keep in touch.

  • Sherry Family of Tedavnet

    Hello -

I have been researching my family history and have tracked

    • John Frances Sherry (b. 1826 - d. 1911) and Catherine McAleer  (b. 1832 - d. 25 Oct 1893). THey were born in Co. Monaghan, i think they were from Tydavnet.  They were married in Belfast in 1850 and later moved to Manchester England and lived and worked and had five children before moving to Wilkinsburg, near Pittsburgh, PA.  Together they had 12 children.
    • I cant figure out exactly who their parents might have been.  But,, I keep coming across a Sarah Sherry who migh have been John's mother or older sister.

Does any one recognize these folks?

Has anyone taken the Ancestry or FTDNA  DNA tests?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Re Sherry family of Tedavnet

I am trying to research Patrick Jacobas Sherry who married Catherine McNally  ,  They were both born around 1840, but dont know which of the birth records I've found online belong to them.  I have found a marriage of Patricus and Catherina  on

12 Feb 1850  and a marriage of Jacobus SHerry and Catherine McNally on 28 Nov 1861.

I found a  Griffiths Vaulation for Drumdesco with both names of Catherine McNally and Patrick Sherry, near each other in 1861 so they may be a connection...

There are records for several children, most born in Scotstown.  between 1862 and 1872.   I am a direct descendant of Margaret Sherry born 31 Mar 1862 in Tedavnet.   Margaret immigrated to the US about 1882.   Her sibling are Rose, John, Patrick, James, Francis, and Patrick II as far as I am able to find.

I read the Sherry family of PEI and cant determine if there is a connection there.

I am also researching a Meehan/Keenan marriage in Monaghan and they have children born in Scotstown as well.

any comments or hints would be most appreciated.   Thanks,  I am hoping to visit in a year or so to research further.
