My grandmother Susan Traynor who died before I was born according to birth records was born in 1885 in Formoyle, Tedavnet district of Scotstown in County Monaghan. At a young age with her mother & sisters she emigrated to North West England where she later married & lived the rest of her life.

My niece who lives in New Zealand & whom my mother always said resembled my grandmother wants to visit her birthplace later this year. We will come in September & would like to find more about my grandmother’s early years in Ireland of which we know nothing. It seems Traynor is a common name in Monaghan. Her mother was Bridget (Biddy) né Griffin. Her father was James (Michael) Traynor. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

  • Birth certs record Traynor family lived in the townland of Formoyle near Scotstown.  146 acres. In the 1901 census there were 7 houses there and a population of 28 people. All engaged in farming or agriculture.

Griffiths Valuation shows a James Griffin on plot 1 in the townland, so that’s presumably where James & Biddy lived.
