My great-grandparents Francis Barker and Teresa McMahon were married in Tehallan (Tyholland) ,County Monaghan on 30th Jan,  1860 when she was 21 years old and living in Tehallan whereas he is living in Liverpool.   In the English census of 1861 his age is given as 32 and hers was 30.  The 1891 census gives them as 61 and 60.  Both of these are in Liverpool where all 6 of their sons were born.  I have not been able to find births/baptisms for either of Francis or Teresa.  In the 1891 census it gives his birthplace as Monaghan, Ireland and hers as Ireland.
In the 1832 Tithe Allotment book there is a Francis Barker senior in Cullmuck-Cawn, Tehallen.  Could this be his father?
I’d like to know more about the Barker and McMahon families before they came to Liverpool in 1860/1861.

  • You don’t say what denomination the family were but I’ll assume RC. The RC baptism records for Tyholland only start in 1835. Consequently from the ages you have from the Liverpool censuses, it looks as though both were born before that year. So that may explain why you can’t find their baptisms.

The townland that Francis Barker snr appears in, in the tithes is recorded at Coolmuckbane in Griffiths in 1860. There’s an Owen Barker there by then who is farming plot 4a which is a 28 acre farm.

The family had gone by 1901:

  • I'm sorry I didn't reply to you but the last two years have been very difficult and I haven't looked at family history. I am now hoping to get back into it. So f you know of anyone that could help me I'd be very grateful.
