My grandmother was Ann Kelly, born in Tullycorbet, County Monaghan, on 27 June 1874. Her parents were Terence Kelly and Margaret Coogan.Terence died in Derrylusk on 21 July 1916 and Margaret died in Derrylusk on 9 August 1917.  Terence and Margaret had a total of 12 children, born between 1862 and 1882.  One thing I have not been able to do is to document where and when Terence and Margaret were married.

  • From what I can see the first of the children (though I can only see baptisms for 11) was born in October 1862 and in May of 1862 the marriage records begin for the parish. It is likely the case then that you will not find a marriage for the couple as they were married before that time. Neither will there be a civil marriage record as they do not start until 1864. Baptisms for the parish begin in April 1862 so there won't be a baptim available for Margaret or Terence either.  While this is disappointing it explains why you cannot locate their details.

There are a couple of Kelly entries on the Tithes in Tullycorbet, I see that Terence is mentioned HERE too in the Griffith's Valuation. It might be a good idea to keep an eye on the Early Marriage Index as it is updated regularly though it is a long shot. You can learn more about it HERE

  • Thanks for the information, Clare.  I looked at the Early Marriage Index today without success, but I'll keep trying.  I was already aware of the Kellys in the Tithes Collection and in Griffith's Valuation. I referred to Terence Kelly and Margaret Coogan as having 12 children. This is because my cousin commissioned a genealogist in Monaghan in 2009 to research the Kelly family. One of his findings included the Kelly gravestone in the Tullycorbet graveyard that mentioned a son of Terence and Margaret named Owen, who was 23 when he died in NY in 1885. If true, perhaps he was the twin of the oldest Kelly child, Mary, who was baptized in Oct 1862. There does not appear to be a record of his baptism, however.
