Hello,

My gg grandparents were John Sharkey/Sharky and Alice/Alicia Doolan. They were married around 1825. We believe John was born circa 1799 and Alice circa 1813.

We know that John was from Birr and assume that Alice was as well. Below is a list of their children and their years of birth.

Bridget 1836

John 1838

Mary 1839

Margaret 1841

Julia 1842

Anna/Anastasia 1844-my great grandmother

Alice/Alicia 1845

Sarah 1848

Patrick 1850

Charles 1855-only child born in the United States

I have found a ship log for John, Margaret, and Alice for December 1853. They traveled together.

Although I haven’t found a ship log for the others I do know that Patrick was born in Ireland and Charles was born in New York, USA, so at least most of them must have arrived here within that time period.

Also, in our 1860 census, they were all in New York, except for Mary and Sarah.

I have found a record in the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers for Sarah Sharkey:

Baptism date        September 1848

Baptism place      Birr and Loughkeen, Offaly and Tipperary, Ireland

Parish Variants    Birr, Loughkeen

Diocese               Killaloe

Also, it appears they lived on Newbridge Street

I will be coming to Ireland and visiting Birr in June and would like to learn as much as I can regarding my family there. Any insights into what would be important for me to learn or see would be greatly appreciated.

Thankfully,

Barbara

  • Dear Jane,

Thank you very much. I see now that I misspelled Sharkey in the subject line. I hope that doesn't confuse things.

My husband and I will be arriving in the Birr area on Friday, June 14th and will be leaving on Sunday, June 16th. We understand that there is going to be a rather large wedding in Birr that weekend and the hotels are occupied, therefore we are staying outside of town in Kinnitty.

    Best wishes,

    Barbara
