William Shea, Elizabeth Shea (nee Maher) there childern, Edward, John, Molly and Mary Shea.

I have Barna as a name, and Cooralevin.  Rathnaveoge as there burial ground, I found it on the map, looks like a really old graveyard, is it safe to go visit?

I am looking to find out if Mary Shea was buried down there with her family, she died in 1910.

I got a picture of the headstone and i don't see her on the list, the name's on the headstone were O Shea rather than Shea, is there a different grave in that cemetery (Rathnaveoge) with the name Shea?

    Hi Scarlett0017

    My name is Dolores Whyte from Dunkerrin Parish in Co Offaly (King's County).

    I have checked the Dunkerrin Parish records for the Shea (O'Shea) family and the following children were baptised to William Shea and Eliza Maher.

    1868 Eliza who married Patk Coonan in 1911.

    1869 James (may have married Eliza Dowling - need to check this out further)

    1872 Mary

    1873 John who married Mary Jane Murphy - descendents of this family are still living in the Parish of Dunkerrin

    1875 Edward

    1877 Thomas who married Jane Guest in 1929.

    I cannot find any details for Mary (which is the same name as Molly, as Molly  being a pet name).  Could you send me on further detaisl that you may have that may assist me in this regard.    I have searched Roots Irealnd and Irish Genealogy but was unable to get details of a marriage or death in 1910.        I could approach the family in the Parish, but would need further details about your request before doing so, and also need their permission to reply to any details about their family.

    With regard to the cemetery in Rathnavogue, this is indeed an old cemetery but still very much in use and can be visited at anya time.  It is about 3 miles from Dunkerrin.  The O'Shea (Shea) family plots are here.

    I look foward to hearing further from you, and we can explore your request further.

    Best regards

    Dolores Whyte Dunkerrin XO

  • Hi Dolores,

    Have the following details on Mary;

    Date of Birth:  23/01/1872.

    Marriage to Patrick O Shaughnessy on the 29/06/1904 at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Golden Bridge in the Registrar's District of New Kilmainham, in the union of South Dublin.

    Patricks address is down as, 11 Albert Place, Kilmainham.  Marys address is down as, Cooraclevin, Kings Co.

    Both fathers names are given, James O Shaughnessy and William Shea, both are on the certificate as farmers.

    Patricks profession is a Railway Guard, and Marys is a Servant.

    The bestman and Bridesmaid are;  Patrick Dooley and Margaret Flood.

    They had four childern, Joseph 1904, Allis (Alice) 1907, James 1910 and my grandmother Bridget 1908.

    Date of Death:  25/05/1910.  Age at time of death: 38.

    At her time of death Patrick was a Railway Porter.

    At her time of death she lived at 4 St Johns Cottages, Kilmainham.

    Can't make out what she died from, just the words, heart failure certified, and she was in hospital at the time.

    Not sure if her death had anything to do with child birth, james was born the year of her death, not sure what month he was born though.

    By all means you can contact the family down there, i don't know if they would know anything, because my own family up here didn't even know her name until i managed to get a copy of the marriage certificate.

    Of course i don't know if there were any family issues here, because it is hard to track down any information about her, it was probably just luck that i managed to get their marrige certificate.

    So now, her grandchildern would like to know where she is buried, because she isn't with Patrick in Glasnevin, we got a copy of who is in the grave there and her name is not on it.

    Which brought me to Kings Co and where she came from.  Would it be possible that she could be buried down there?  Maybe some of the family down there would know that.

    From looking at both the 1901 and 1911 census forms for Kings Co, she is not on either one, i can see her parents and two of her brothers on there.

    Which got me thinking that she was already up in Dublin by then because she married Patrick in 1904, so she had to have been up here in Dublin for a while.  But where is anybodies guess, she could have been a servant anywhere.

    Hope all this is helpful to you.

    I will look forward to hear back from you.

  • Dolores,

    Shea census forms;

    1901:  Lists William, Elizabeth, Thomas and Edward.

    1911:  Lists William, Elizabeth, Thomas and John.

    Correction for Mary;  Of course Mary won't be on any 1911 census form.

    Shaughnessy census forms;

    1901:  Lists Patrick (Marys husband), Allis (Alicia) his mother and Catherine his sister, all residing at 11 Albert Place.

    1911:  Lists Patrick, Catherine, Joseph, Allis (Alice), Bridget and James, residing at 4 St Johns Cottages.
