Hello Laois Group, I'm looking for information regarding Margaret Delaney born in Laois around 1840. She had at least two Brothers that came to the US.; Thomas and Richard. Richard may have had some health OR mental issues. Margaret's Father may have been John according to her 1929 Death Certificate. I would apprecite any help in this matter! Sincerely, Tim

  • Hi Tim,

Thank you for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Do you have any information or documentation that may mention a specific placename in Co. Laois? If you can narrow down where Margaret lived to a parish, or even a town or village it would greatly help with your search for information.

Did Margerat also emigrate? If so do you know anything about her emigration, or even that of her brothers? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew what city they arrived at it may help you find information-and perhaps even a specific place of origin. A good place to start when looking for ship records etc is the US National Archive at the following address:

     http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Once you know what parish Margarett belonged to you can then search Church Records for information. Most Catholic Records are held locally. One website that may be of use to you is the irishtimes website as they give you an overview of what records are held in each specific county. You can find the website here:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/

For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/

You could also sheck for some record of Margaret's family in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records pertaining to Ireland between 1823 and 1838. You can search these here:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

Some other websites which may help you in your search are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    and Family Search: https://familysearch.org/

I hope this helps. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • FYI there are quite a lot of Delaneys in Camross Co Laois about 8 miles from Mountrath. I have been in touch with an elderly lady Mrs Delaney who looks after the parish records there. Don't know if this is any help.

Referring to griffiths valuation for Ireland might help as it shows tenants and owners but the date it was carried out might not fit.
